Comments:

Passat turned out to be the only left-handed car in his group. Like all automakers, Volkswagen assures that cars with the right and left steering wheel are equally safe, and experts had no reason to doubt the case of Passat. The car complied with safety requirements in late 1998. With a frontal impact, he also showed himself well, however, rigid elements at the bottom of the front panel were dangerous for knees, heads and driver's pelvis.

Front punch:

Left windshield stand shifted back by 68 mm. Passenger salon retained integrity. When hitting the driver's door was opened, so there was no problems with its discovery. The front passenger door also opened normally. The steering wheel shifted back by 85 mm and up 15 mm. The deepening was much compressed, and the brake pedal moved back to 91 mm. Due to the unstable contact of the driver's head with the airbag, the assessment for its protection has been reduced. The neck was protected well, and the passive security systems prevented the punch of the chest about the steering wheel. Load on the chest from the seat belt remained in the safe limits. The passenger salon retained the integrity, contributing to the good protection of breasts of the front seds. The left knee of the driver hit the tray for smallers, but if the blow had come a little to the side, the steering column bracket would be. Penalty points were accrued for it. If the blow had fallen above, then the knee would fall into the lock and the mechanism of adjusting the position of the steering column, and the deeper advancement of the front panel was threatened with more serious damage. The right knee of the driver pretended to the soft plastic walking along the steering column, pressed its casing and, in the end, got to the speaker itself. Evaluation for the protection of the knee, shin and pelvis was reduced due to the likelihood of a strike on the steering column lock and the mechanism for adjusting its position. The mounting bolts and the adjustment lever of the steering column can cause the knee injury. The protection of the bottom of the left leg was recognized as bad. The niche for the legs was slightly compressed, but the feet and the ankles are protected well. Protecting the passenger as a whole turned out to be good, although the load on the chest from the seat belt was sufficient to lead to injury. There was also a small risk of damage to the left knee, shin and pelvis.

Security of passenger children:

Child's head protection. Four of six checkpoints corresponded to the requirements: over the coolant tank support bracket, over the back of the engine cover and over the amplifier of the hood cover and the fold line.

Side strike:

With a side strike, Passat, by and large, showed itself well, complying with the requirements of 1998, but the protection of the abdominal department of the driver was recognized as weak. Head defense turned out to be good.

Pedestrian safety:

Protection of the top of the legs. None of three points corresponded to the requirements. Two showed the result above average, and one - below. Adult head protection. None of the control points corresponded to the requirements. Five showed the result better than the average, including places above the amplifier of the hood cover, above the brake fluid tank, and on the wiper. Protection of legs. None of the points corresponded to the requirements - all showed the result worse than the average.
