Ssangyong Rexton test drive since 2006 SUV

Ssangyong Korean brand was created as an Asian branch of the German concern Daimler-Benz (then Chrysler was not yet part of the company). The exact share of German capital is carefully hidden, but it is clearly small and its influence was felt primarily in technological support. At first, power units, both gasoline and diesel, as well as some other technologies, were supplied from Germany, and then transferred to licensed assembly. In fairness, it is worth noting that the Germans were supplied far from the most advanced ideas, but those that are already ending their life cycle in Germany, but also such a gift in Korea Rada. Ssangyong always stood half a century above any other Korean automaker precisely thanks to cooperation with Mercedes.
 
 
And the modeling range of the Korean company has always had a very representative SUV and big sedans. No small -leafers. The only thing that could somehow discredit the brand? These are pickups, but in the name they always had a Sport prefix, and their design can be called anything, but not utilitarian.
 
During the first wave of the Korean rise and the Asian crisis followed by the Ssangyong, I managed not to be under the control of Daewoo. The mass brand also wanted to enjoy German technologies, but went bankrupt, became part of the General Motors concern and left international markets. Meanwhile, Ssangyong again gained independence, retaining loyalty to SUVs and large sedans. The latter were practically not supplied to Russia, but the latest generation of the representative Chairman (Eng. Chairman) debuted at the Frankfurt car dealership and now the issue of the possibility of sales in Russia is being studied.
 
However, back to our Ssangyong Rexton II hero today. His first generation was born in 2002, and the SUV immediately aroused interest at his unusual design. Someone drew attention to the measure of the radiator grille, someone more remembered the reverse tilt of the rear rack. The car is based on a spar frame and an uncertain rear bridge on the springs. Full -wheel drive is either connected or permanent depending on the power and type of engine. A choice of mechanical or automatic transmission. In this form, Rexton lasted until 2007, and recently the SUV was subjected to serious restyling, which is associated not only with the new design of the front, but also the appearance of an independent rear suspension, promising at the same time more comfort and better cross -country ability. To identify Rexton, the easiest thing in front, it has become like ... a Chinese. And not for some specific car, most of which are fakes, for eminent stamps, but a collective absolutely faceless image. Oval headlights-eyes are able to cause emotion on the small Daewoo Matiz, but not on a large SUV at a price of $ 50,000. It is almost impossible to imagine a lady behind the wheel of Rexton, and men are unlikely to attract such headlights. Previous lanterns with faces looked clearly more interesting and more organic! Maybe Rexton is not chosen for appearance?
 
In the cabin, the changes are more balanced. Those who traveled on the old Rexton will find a lot for themselves. A completely different central console with stylish chromium and shiny plastic trim. The steering wheel with an abundance of buttons resembles an accordion, and the size of the buttons seems to be designed to press them in fur gloves. But the optimal panel of the devices is simple and understandable and not even devoid of grace. In the most prominent place in the central console, a convenient pocket for a mobile phone is provided. That's just the rear seats in Rexton were surprisingly cramped. Places above the head with a margin, but in the legs it is crowded, and three adult passengers are unlikely to be comfortable here with comfort. But the trunk is just huge.
 
There is no need to wait for good controllability on the road from a large SUV, and Rexton II does not give it. Ssangyong is just going, as they expect from him. Significant rolls, an empty steering wheel is normal for a frame car, but shocks from bumps are not transmitted to the steering wheel, and at high speed Rexton pleases with good course stability and does not react to the rut at all. Slit policemen and other asphalt defects can simply be ignored by all of them properly absorbed by a long -flowing energy -intensive suspension.
 
The 3.2-liter Mercedes engine is aggregated with a 5-speed automatic and is fully consistent with three-beam ideology. Comfortable switching, highly stretched gear. It is almost impossible to accelerate at the last stage, and therefore acceleration is available only a second after pressing the gas when the machine deals with the switching down. The fuel consumption under 20 liters also does not surprise: about the same amount is consumed by the Mercedes ML320 of the last generation with a similar power unit. Still to improve sound insulation, otherwise when the tachometer arrow exceeds the 3 thousandth mark, the salon is filled with the animal roar of the motor. Yes, it is fully justified by confident acceleration, but still competitors are perhaps quieter.
 
We decided to evaluate REXTON not on off -road, but in the urban urban landscape. How many steps can an SUV rise? There are two difficulties in this maneuver. Firstly, this is a road clearance under the front bumper and REXTON is all right here. We easily call on the first step, and also overcome two more. Most even parquet SUVs do this task, but further upsurge allows us to find out that we have a fake for a jeep or a real rogue. The fact is that on the second or third step, most machines reach diagonal hanging. The rear wheel was already breaking away from the ground, and this inevitably causes unloading the front wheel located diagonally and the car stops. The blocking of the central differential no longer saves, it is required inter -normal, and not everyone has it. An alternative option for confrontation with diagonal posting large strokes of suspensions. Then the wheels will simply not come off the ground, and the machine will continue to move.
 

The developers of the Ssangyong Rexton chose the second path, and a large SUV, like a gutta -perch hippopotamus, spread its limbs along the steps in such a way that all the wheels gained reliable contact with the surface, and the staircase was longer, it could be climbed indefinitely. Even 15-20 years ago, almost any all-wheel drive possessed this opportunity. Now, obeying the fashion on light all-wheel drive Pacrets, high-quality crooks were in short supply, and it is all the more pleasant that one of them has been produced since recently in Russia, at the facilities of the Severstal-Auto plant in Naberezhnye Chelny.
 
Is it worth buying Ssangyong Rexton II? It depends on what purposes if there is a passion for hunting, fishing or just off -road adventures, then the Korean of the Russian assembly is very good. Moreover, it will be possible to get to the destination with a comfortable and pleasant eye of the salon, and the place for baggage and production will be enough with a margin. With everyday urban driving, Ssangyong is going like a spaniel without hunting. He becomes bored, and he strives to at least jump on the steps in order to somehow entertain himself. For urban life for 1,160,000 rubles, which was worth the tested Rexton, you can choose a more suitable powerful SUV like Mazda CX-7. As for the simpler versions of the Rex, which cost from 970,000 rubles, this is a decent price for a real full -size SUV.
