Hyundai i20 and Volkswagen Polo: The price of the question

It happens that you get into the car and immediately unconditionally understand: it is definitely yours (or not yours). But the choice between the long -established Volkswagen Polo, in fact the little Golf, and I20, the representative of the newly -made Hyundai line, which should not give up unpretentious and convenient, like beloved slippers, Getz, and at the same time to occupy a new niche, it was difficult to do.

The cars turned out to be so similar and at the same time diametrically different that when one broke forward, the second quickly gained glasses of its own advantages and aligned the score.

Let's say appearance. At first glance, the exterior I20 wins against the backdrop of a serious and adult species Polo. As if the same, our beloved Getz (each of us has a familiar, skating on a red or green hectare hectare!) Was twitched in the corners, came to life with the facial expressions of cheerful embossed lines and now mischievously peeps around with self -confident headlights. Due to the fact that Hyundai designers have retained the recognizable calm appearance of Getz, the car does not merge with a crowd of round-sided and sharp-eyed hatchbacks of the B-class. Undoubtedly, AI20 outwardly much more interesting than a boring polo! Until you look at the baby VW live, and not at the photo.

Differences in the exterior are evident: a typical oriental design with a slanting optics against German conciseness and severity.

The new Polo is the most severe of small cars! This narrowed gaze, a tightened sports silhouette and a bumper grin can force him to take him for the senior Golf, and the spoiler over the fifth door hints at the potential. Non-standard square rear lights with flashing clear lines of stop symbols are especially good. Stylish, serious, inspiring confidence in one look.

Similar in technical characteristics and equipment, these compact hatchbacks are completely different in perception, character and, of course, price ...

The stylish interior of the Hyundai i20 is amused by the silvered inserts on the central console, the steering wheel and deflectors of the blow. In German, hard front seats have a good profile and good lateral support. Ergonomics on top. However, the quality of plastic is lame in the cabin of not a single soft part. However, everything looks nice and even elegant by eye, all the screws are neatly covered with plugs, the seats are comfortable, the doors are easily closed and do not rattles. True, already with a slight run somewhere in the panel, a cricket settled.

The VW Polo salon is the standard of ergonomics and the quality of finishing materials. A pleasant to the touch textured plastic is adjacent to the noble fabric on the chairs. The design of the Voltsvagen interior is a tribute to unification in the automotive industry.

After Hyundai, the interior of VW Polo seems to be a business class. It is indecent to write banal enthusiastic reviews about the quality of the assembly and materials of Volkswagen cars, but what to do if they are really soft and high -quality plastic everywhere, and the steering wheel is covered with a pleasant skin with the skin. All switches and buttons turn on with a noble European effort. Even by the sound of a slamming door, you can determine that you are facing a purebred German. Ergonomics cannot be held. Of the aesthetic chips, an unusual, acute -angle shape of side mirrors with points of built -in turn signals. I was pleased with the sensory color display on which the audio system data is displayed. But the hinged central armrest blocks access to the handbrake is inconvenient.

The Hyundai i20 salon is no less convenient, but the quality of finishing materials is significantly lower, which, however, is more than compensated by the difference in price.

The driver's seat is good: the adjustments are enough for both high and sports planting. You can only complain at a short distance between the pedals, from which in winter shoes it will be difficult to control with German strong.

In both machines, all sorts of tanks for small things are well thought out: pockets, boxes, cup holders. The i20 glove box is especially striking that it is so deep that it reaches almost to the engine compartment. And in both there are ports necessary for a modern motorist for connecting a USB flash drive, because it is so more convenient not to look for the desired disk among 20, but simply to choose the desired folder with the movement of the finger.

For a comparative test, we chose a five -door body. Under the hood of an 85-horsepower 1.4-liter gasoline motor, which is associated with a new 7-speed robotic DSG transmission.

Both duelists are equipped with 1.4-liter gasoline engines, however, their technical similarities end. The VW Polo engine produces 85 hp. In the Korean passport data, 15 hp more. But on the declared acceleration of up to 100 km/h Volkswagen faster than I20 by 0.8 seconds 12.9 versus 12.1 seconds. The fact is that Polo offers a new 7-speed robotic gearbox DSG, and Hyundai is content with an ancient 4-band automaton.

Polo was built on a modernized platform of the previous generation of the model, and Hyundai I20 received its basis from senior models for the Hyundai -Kia concern - I30 and Cee`d hatchbacks.

The new Volkswagen Polo is based on a modernized platform of the previous generation. In order to improve handling, engineers reconfigured Mcpherson front suspension and modernized the rear, installing advanced silent blocks.

As for the Hyundai I20 platform, here it is unified with senior models of the Hyundai i30 and Kia Cee`d, from which it inherited 1.4 and 1.6 liters.

The Hyundai i30 drives a 100-horsepower 1.4 liter engine. The advantage over Polo is as much as 15 hp. However, according to the passport acceleration to a hundred, the Korean loses 0.8 seconds. The old 4-speed machine does not withstand rivalry with modern DSG.

The AI20 justifies its more daring appearance in motion. The sensitive gas pedal now and then provokes the slipping of the studded tires of the Korean hatchback. The car reacts very responsive to the accelerator and, withstanding a pause that is characteristic of machines, easily rushes forward, reliably clinging to the road. Even on winter studded tires, the gambling controllability of the Hyundai i20 presented a real surprise. Already after the first trip on a bright green hatchback, we immediately rushed on the Internet: did the Koreans leave a hydraulic power steering? But no, there is an electric motor on the steering shaft. Such an electric assistant cannot be remembered: the reactions in the sporting tight steering wheel are clear and understandable. However, zero is smeared at speed. In addition, after 120 km/h, I20 begins to scour with his nose, demanding constant adjustment of the trajectory.

Hyundai trunk volume (photo below) is 295 liters. Polo includes a little less - 280 liters. But under the floor of the German luggage compartment, a convenient box lurked for different little things.

And in this the difference in the characters of the German and Korean is manifested. If the i20 is sensitive, sometimes to extremes, sometimes allegedly striving to get out of control, allowing passengers to scare passengers with dashing PA, then Polo is different. He has everything right and everything is under control.

In terms of the number of space for the rear passengers, both duels are similar. High passengers are clearly not a place here.

The 85-horsepower Polo motor is already pulling from below, but it starts to invite only after 3000 rpm, and when the tachometer arrow exceeds the five thousandth mark, the pickup disappears. Fortunately, the new DSG has as many as seven steps with which she can keep Polo in a large range. Up a robotic box with two clutches clicks the transmission, like from a machine gun. But when it is necessary to switch to a reduced one, DSG withstands a second pause and only then throws the moment to the desired gear. To avoid delay, a second before the jerk you only need to stomp a little on the accelerator pedal, and a smart transmission will immediately prepare the necessary step. Now the driver can safely go to gas without being afraid to lose precious time. The programs of the 4-speed automatic to the Korean are stretched, but due to the 15-lord advantage I20 is no less than the shuust. Yes, and switching automatic transmission smooth without large delays.

VW clearly writes a given trajectory and stably goes in a straight line. Hyundai boasts a more adequate effort on the steering wheel and gambling in a bend. But on a direct Korean, he scribbles with his nose, demanding constant adjustment by the steering wheel.

The VW Polo steering wheel amplifier has a more synthetic effort than that of the i20. But in the parking lot the steering wheel is light, like a fluff. Lovely ladies just right. The reactions to the turns of the lamb are not as sharp as on Hyundai, but in all movements there is more thoroughness. On a direct German hatchback stands like a glove. If the Hyundai i20 in the virazh is azarten, like a player in a tape measure, then VW Polo prefers to take a composure and calmness of the chess player. The stabilization system for a second does not give the car the opportunity to fly out of the trajectory, you feel like an extreme driving professional! And if you turn off the ESP, the polo will allow you to step a little, but it will still remain extremely stable and controlled.

In the arsenal of the test VW Polo, optional two-stage heating of the front seats (11,800 rubles), a multifunction steering wheel (12,970 rubles) and electronic climate control (48,990 rubles).

The noise insulation of the Germans is on top. The VW suspension swallows a road trifle without a trace, and only on bumps in the cabin begins to shake. Hyundai's acoustic comfort is inferior to Polo. A more rigid suspension pays more attention to small bumps, and the pits are more serious accompanied by a strong shaking.

The suspension swallows small bumps with the agility of the business class sedan. Hyundai is more addicted to the flaws of the road surface.

The brakes on both hatchbacks did not cause complaints, but the pedal on VW Polo is too sensitive, which is why the first time passengers have to peck their nose on almost all traffic lights.

No doubt Volkswagen Polo, who received the honorary title Car of the Year 2010, wears it not in vain. A strict and solid appearance, excellent quality of interior execution, reliable, honored handling and a large list of additional equipment allowed VW Polo deserved to become one of the leaders of their segment.

Hyundai equipment is no worse than that of Voltsvagen. Here is the climate control, and heating the seats, and the stabilization system. For audiophiles there is a connector for connecting iPod and USB.

What can contrast Hyundai I20 to the younger brother of the legendary VW Golf? Stylish appearance, good ergonomics, gambling and almost not so little, which is not inferior to Voltswagen, is not so little.

AI 20 exciting nervousness or controlled excitement? Brown and harmonious Hyundai or stylish and harsh Volkswagen? A better and stylish German salon or a price advantage of 200,000 rubles of a Korean?

The basic cost of the Hyundai i20 with a motor of 1.2 liters and manual transmission is 419,900 rubles. The starting cost of VW Polo is 52 thousand rubles more. The difference in prices for cars participating in the test is more striking. If the Korean compact with a 1.4 liter engine and automatic transmission in the maximum execution of Elegance will cost 601,900 rubles, then the same equipped Polo will require 811,000 rubles.

Yes, in similar Hyundai trim levels 200 (!) Thousands are cheaper than Polo. This is where the priority collision arises when it is necessary to determine how high the price of the issue is.
