The appearance of a compartment with four rings on the hood we had been waiting for a long time and finally waited. Before us is the Audi A5, built on the new platform of the A4 family. In the mid-90s, Audi produced a 3-door shedding hatchback, but the main emphasis in Ingolstadt was always on universals. The legendary Audi S2 preparation Porsche, then the 380-horsepower RS4 both models were equipped exclusively by Avant body. And here we have a real 2-door compartment, and even with the S5 nameplate. The designers who built A5 had a very responsible task to create the proportions of the classic compartment, otherwise, buyers could not understand innovations, because there is a younger brother in the person of TT, but at the same time make an original form, because the traditional straightforward style of Audi has not evaporated anything for a long time, In addition to boredom and desire to yawn. In addition, A5 was supposed to prepare the public in the emergence of a new generation of A4 Sedan of the best -selling Audi model. So the coupe bets were made very large.
Having examined the A5 with addiction, one cannot but admit the work performed perfectly: a group of designers under the direction of Walter de strong coped with their task well. Perhaps the ESCA seems somewhat heavy due to too inflated wheeled arches, in which even 18-inch wheels are lost, but this is already a nit-picking. The compartment looks very dynamic, which has not been for Audi for a long time, but it is recognizable. What is the wavy side line of naked erotica! Add charm LED cilia, like a compartment R8.
The interior is decorated in a traditional Audi style. Exactly the same MMI system is installed on the senior models A6, A8 and on the Q7 SUV. Management at first glance seems quite complicated due to the abundance of buttons with poisonous red backlight. But after a couple of hours of active use of navigation and other functions with MMI you find a common language and then it does not cause any complaints, everything is intuitively understood than thanks to a large and contrasting display with an abundance of additional information.
The steering wheel, armchairs and, in general, ergonomics are also well familiar from other Audi, so you don’t have to get used to it. Without delaying the case in a long box, I press the Start Engine button on the central tunnel and on the road. Smoothly move (S5 is sold only with mechanics, other boxes are not yet available for ESKA), an electronic handbrake helps on the rise, which holds the car when stopping and is released when touched. With calm driving, this helps a lot, but with quick starts it is better to do everything yourself, without the help of automation. After all, the S5 is obviously not for a measured driving? Yes and no.
Riding on the compartment calmly does not make any difficulty motor allows you to switch through the transmission, or even through two. Long -flow clutch interferes somewhat, but Volkswagen Group has already been used to it for several years of regular tests of cars. If you go carefully, do not press the gas more than a third, and do not raise speeds above 3,000 mark, then we have a convenient and comfortable compartment for every day, the average fuel consumption has only 12-14 liters per hundred. Economic riding is helped by an electronic clue showing which transmission is now turned on and which one is worth switching to. Moreover, his task is to save fuel, therefore, when accelerating to the floor, he keeps silent until the arrow of the tachometer reaches the red zone, but when calmly driving, he periodically advises to jump over the step. When slowing down, the soufler recalls the benefits of braking by the engine.
But you can’t only save. Born must fly! Gas to the floor! It is impossible to say that acceleration on the S5 is fascinating, but looking at the speedometer arrow, you understand that feelings have been deceived. The speed is significantly higher than that expected. The programs cling perfectly one to another, and it is possible to exceed 220 km/h by accident, assuming that the speed does not exceed 160 km/h permitted on the Moscow Ring Road. The motor honestly practices the declared 354 hp. And the working volume of 4.2 liters, which is easily forced up to 420 horses, does not allow to doubt the perky temperament. At the same time, comfort and silence are preserved in the cabin, as if you are managing not a sports compartment, but a powerful business class sedan. Perhaps even the Audi sedan The previous generation S4 was perceived as a more sports car. To complete the sensation, the five lacks a juicy soundtrack. A characteristic gurgle, characteristic of all eights, is heard only, oddly enough, on the bottom, up to 2000 rpm. Above the sound of the motor sinks in a common hum and high -quality sound insulation. Even when accelerating into the floor, you have to constantly monitor the tachometer of that and look at the engine will rush into the limiter, but you will not hear this. In a closed car, you feel like a first -class passenger unquestioningly reliable German Lufthansa. Nothing in the cabin will creak, and not the irregularities or unnoticed at night the S5 police officers are passing with truly Aryan resistance. It seems that it is almost impossible to achieve a breakdown of the suspension. But the coins of the body could be smaller. Although this is a matter of priority. For everyday drives on roads like Moscow, the suspension setting is almost perfect, but the sports control that you expect from any car with the Audi S nameplate are pushed into the background.
If you enter the turn with excess speed, then the ESCA will banally slide out the front wheels, and to do something will be very difficult to do with this, non-optimal weighting with the V8 motor in front of the front axis makes itself felt. Compared to the previous generation of the Audi A4 on the top five, the transmission was redone, which made it possible to improve the situation, removed the balance of the center differential in favor of the rear axle (the standard distribution of torque of the XX/XX), but it was not possible to completely defeat insufficient rotation.

The engine displaced inside the wheelbase, the Kevland roof and the hood that create almost perfect weighting, and the low center of gravity. BMW handling is incomparable the car is clearly driving, and it is worth turning off the stabilization system, as the skid will not be long in coming. With Emka you have to hold the ear in the way, and then the car will repay with a magnificent drive. The cranes of the body are minimal, and the suspension, as usual in BMW, is dentist. The transfer of shock absorbers into a comfortable resolves the situation somewhat saves the situation, but the Bavar is incredibly far from real comfort that the Audi S5 shines.
Audi S5 is more malleable and soft. But it cannot be called a weakling. At starting from a place, even on wet, not to mention sprinkled with snowball, asphalt, ESCA does not give M3 the slightest chance. Old Torsen regularly plays the torque between the axes, and Audi flies forward like a bullet. The soft suspension and unsuccessful weighting S5 are forced to reduce the speed before the turns, but the acceleration can also begin earlier, almost without fear of skidding and with incredible acceleration, which is inaccessible to Bavarz in conditions of slush. In addition, with a disabled Audi stabilization system, it allows to storm turns in a rally style: braking in front of the turn, provocation of drift and sliding with all wheels for almost the entire arc. It turns out fast enough and very impressive.
And of course, in choosing any car, the last factor is its price. Here, between the rivals, the parity does not smell. The basic configuration of the Audi S5 costs 64,953 euros (2,311,170 rubles), while the prices for the BMW M3 begin at 2,516,500 rubles. You can easily get both cars for another 200-500 thousand rubles, but in this case, the trifles of the driving characteristics do not change from this.
We did not pass by and the practical side of the issue on the size of trunk and salons between M3 and S5 almost equality. As for the appearance, this is a matter of addictions. BMW looks more frying, and a hump on the hood is clearly hinting at the immodest motor, as if turbocharged was hidden under it. You can identify S5 primarily by the underestimated front bumper and nameplates. There are no more identification marks, and they are not needed here, there is nothing truly extreme in the S5 in essence. Just a powerful and very elastic motor, while the M3 is a charismatic sports car, which will be few on the ring track like a Nordschlyife. In winter, it is better to preserve such a car in the garage, moving to an all -wheel drive three -wing, and even better to X3 or X5. Audi is a magnificent powerful car for every day. And for those who want to drive four rings to furnish the BMW in an honest struggle on dry asphalt, you will have to wait for the RS5 Supercope, the appearance of which is expected in 2008 ...
