Comments:
Although the overall rating of Hatchback - the founder of the family - was three stars, the results of the side strike did not comply with the requirements introduced in the next - 1998th year. In the lateral blow, the high load on the chest indicated the poor protection of this part of the body. The head, the abdominal and pelvic directions of the driver were generally well protected. With a frontal impact, the metal support of the steering column and the torpedo jumped out of the attachment, heavily damaging the deepening for the legs. The basic configuration of the model included the driver's airbag, which worked well, without allowing the impact of the chest about the steering wheel. Rigid elements at the bottom of the torpedo increased the likelihood of injury to the drivers, knees or hips.
Front punch:
The left front stand shifted back by 70 mm. The beam supporting the torpedo and the steering column broke down as the result was deformed the passenger interior. The driver's door had to hack, although the passenger opened easily. The steering wheel shifted back by 97 mm and up to 52 mm, the brake pedal "flew" by as much as 259 mm, so the shift in the niche for the legs was recognized as excessive. Protection of the head and neck turned out to be good, but the chest is very bad. Although the airbag and belt kept the driver's body, damage to the beam supporting the torpedo, created a threat, and the risk of injury could be significantly higher with some other circumstances of the collision. With a frontal blow, the left knee of the driver struck the knob position adjustment lever, the casing of the speaker and the front panel, but if the blow had occurred to another place, the knee would be out on the hard structural elements. Right knee slid along the coat of the steering column and rested in the torpedo, only slightly away from the solid castle of the column. Concentrated loads could also cause local damage. This led to a decrease in the general result. Protection of the lower part of both legs is recognized as weak based on the testimony of mannequin sensors, and significant deformations of the leg niches further reduced the estimate for the protection of the feet and the ankles. Special concern caused the load belt load on the peasant passenger and the forces acting on his right leg. The protection of the feet and ankles of the passenger is recognized as good.
Side strike:
Mondeo did not comply with the 1998 security requirements for lateral impact. This result was made due to the high load on the ribs recorded by the sensors in the body of the mannequin, which led to the "bad" estimate for the protection of this area. However, the protection of the head, the abdominal and the pelvic departments of the driver turned out to be good.
Pedestrian safety:
Two of the six seats of a possible hit of the child's head corresponded to the requirements. Three points were above average, one below - at the junction of the hood and wing. None of the test points of the upper part of the legs corresponded to the requirements. Places where the head of a shot down adult pedestrian does not comply with the requirements. Four places are better than average, and two worse: above the loop of the hood cover and above the wiper.
