The new Range Rover Evoque is undoubtedly good. But how good is it? And regarding what? We decided to deal with this using a comparative test. And as an opponent, they chose for Evoque no less glamorous BMW X1 crossover

The worm of doubts about the correctness of the BMW X1 selection as a competitor to Evoque immediately began its job as soon as the cars were nearby. Or maybe it was necessary to take the BMW X3? The Briton looks painfully magnificent against the background of Bavarz. And wider, and higher, and more solid somehow. Yes, there is no direct competitor X3, nevertheless, Land Rover Frelander 2. But the BMW X1 is the most opponent for Evoque. So what, that the latter is wider and higher. But BMW is longer, and the wheelbase will be more. Plus, no matter how much the German is pressed to the ground relative to the British, the difference in the clearance is only two centimeters. That is, only one finger and yet Evoque looks more solid. For all its glamor, there is more from the SUV in it than in X1. The latter, on the contrary, says with all its appearance that he is closer to asphalt than buuse and slopes. Anyway, he is somehow calmer or something.

By the way, an equally calm and restrained style is inherent in the German salon. Everything is clearly, concise, everything is in its place, and the slightest desire to be better than it really is. As they say, who does not like it, close the door from that side. But most likely, there will be no people who want to do this, because the BMW is just as attractive to anyone who understands a lot about cars, how attractive pepper chili is for a real gourmet. However, in addition to the fact that BMW have always been cars for the driver, no less designers here thought about passengers. Which, in fact, is confirmed by practice. But only about three passengers. The center sitting on the back sofa will clearly be disappointed with a huge hump of the tunnel on the floor. Yes, and the seat profile itself in this place is far from human anatomy. So from behind only two will receive a true pleasure from a distant trip: there is both an armrest and the seats adjusted along the corner of the back of the back of the seats. These backs, in addition to increasing comfort, also allow you to increase the trunk. He put the back vertically, and now the fifth door closed without problems. And in the trunk, by the way, the washing machine in the package. However, no matter how much the trunk X1 seemed to be, yet its volume is small 420 liters. Putting the backs of the rear seats, we can talk about 1350 liters.
In this regard, Evoque surpassed his opponent: with the same transformation in the British, the trunk volume is 1445 liters. And with the normal position of the back of the rear row, 575 liters. Although visually it still seems less than BMW. But against the numbers, as they say, you can’t read it.


As you can’t say against the fact that the Evoque salon is much more interesting from the point of view of both design and saturation. We have repeatedly described the riot of various kinds of lotions inherent in this Range Rover, and yet it is worth mentioning some of them that highlight it on the background of BMW. For example, the central monitor, although it has similar dimensions, is still different both in management and in functionality. Firstly, it is active, and secondly, it allows the driver and passenger to read different information from him. The driver, say, watches navigation, while the passenger can look at the TV show. There is no such function in BMW.

As does not have X1 and the opportunity to look around the corner. The German chamber is provided only to help in reversing. Evoque has already five, two in front, two from the sides and one behind. Moreover, the image from them can be displayed both at once and in pairs. It is much more multifunctional in RR and the steering wheel. From it on Evoque you can manage almost everyone, starting with an audio system and ending with shifts. But with all its advantages, the salon also has disadvantages. So, the front passenger’s legs are very small, and even with the seat completely moved back, it will not work to pull them completely. The rear review through the salon mirror also leaves much to be desired. The maximum that the driver sees in him is a narrow gap.

However, we were most struck by the suspension settings. In any version, whether it is a dynamic mode, or the off -road driving mode shakes in the car significantly. Evoque suspension is especially unpleasant for the hang up. Not too understandable to active shock absorbers and excellent asphalt. Apparently, those 1000 times per second for which the system controls the suspension controls in Russian conditions is not enough: literally every crack is given on the steering wheel. Even before the start of the test, we were ready to argue that this is how BMW would behave, but no.

Bavar, on the contrary, demonstrated loyalty to both our roads and directions, while in no way to please the loss of controllability. BMW was impeccable on the asphalt and is just as pleasant on the lane. In any case, the suspension did not sin with the hard work. The only thing that really prevented him from moving along the forest paths was a very large front overhang. By the way, it was he who forced us to prudently leave the car on the hill: a small bend when entering the motocross route, alas, became an insurmountable obstacle for BMW.

And at this time, Evoque was already frozen on the remnants of the once -sought -after track, spitting sand and stones. There is no dispute, the capabilities of Range Rover on the off -road compared to BMW are simply unlimited. And here everything works for the result, from the correct geometry of the suspension stroke to the famous Terran Response system. The latter adjusts the operation of the engine, transmission and electronic systems that provide maximum adhesion to the road, for each specific case. However, she, alas, was not always adequate. No matter how hard we tried to take a rather steep hill in different modes, but, already reaching the middle of the ascent, the car began to rotate helplessly with wheels in place. The obstacle was submitted to Evoque only then the code was completely turned off the stabilization system. Roaring a 240 -horsepower engine and torn the cube of dirt and sand from the hill, the car was at the top after a second. It is likely that such a focus would be repeated to BMW, all the more so that the torque of its 2.0 -frail diesel engine is higher than that of the gasoline Evoque. But, alas. The stylish appearance prevented BMW even get to this place. As a result, we could not fully evaluate what this Bavarian crossover is capable of. However, we still received the true pleasure of X1. Like it or not, Evoque could not equal him on the asphalt, and the second that the German lost during acceleration to a hundred, was more than compensated when the turns passed. The Briton was not so good in corners. But this is relative to BMW
 

Colorful, and therefore clearly

Einstein was right: everything in this world is relative. Many consider Range Rover Evoque a rather relative SUV. But if you compare it with the BMW X1, then this relativity acquires a different meaning. As, however, the glamority of the BMW X1 has its own relativity. For us, so Evoque is much more glamorous.
