Comments:

Despite the restyling conducted shortly before the test, the MX-5 body and chassis remained almost the same as when the model appeared in 1989. Despite his age, the car proved to be well enough to obtain a rating of 4 stars, providing a balanced defense in the frontal and lateral strikes. However, with a frontal impact, the security frame of the passenger department was significantly deformed. To obtain the worst results, the tests were carried out with a lowered roof. With a lateral blow, the roof was raised to verify the probability of a driver to receive a head injury due to a blow to its elements. Being double, the car could not be tested with installed children's seats, although this did not stop checking the presence and effectiveness of the corresponding mounts and marking. The protection of pedestrians was weak.

Frontal blow:

The pillow of safety protected the driver's head, but the load on its chest was relatively high. The car is designed so that the energy of the collision spreads through the lower part, through the thresholds and other elements of the bottom. Doors are not ready to withstand high loads. Experts criticized this approach due to the fact that in some accidents the doors should help to dissipate energy. The knees of the front riders can get a serious injury when hitting hard elements near the steering column and fastening the glove box.

Safety of passenger children:

The car recognizes the presence of a children's chair recommended by the manufacturer in the passenger place and automatically turns off the airbag, turning on the warning inscription. However, this system does not work with other chairs, which is dangerous when ignored the driver. The warnings in the driver’s sun visor are not specific.

Side blow:

The load on the driver’s chest was relatively large, which increased the risk of injury. The load on its abdominal department was also relatively high, but the overall result of the MX-5 was not bad for a car without side airbags, which are not included in the basic configuration.

Pedestrian safety:

The front edge of the hood is very low, the test results are very bad.
