From Barnaul to us, a team of nine journalists with five UAZs, will have to get to the Aktr glaciers, on the North-Chuy Range of Altai. These machines are already familiar to readers (ZR, 2007, No. 4): comfortable seats from renovation, updated vacuum amplifier and the main cylinder of the brake system, the eighth generation from Bosch, the modernized cooling system, the Del-Phi hydraulic wire instead of the previous ZF and the air conditioner.
Our belongings dissolve in a huge trunk, although there are already a few large boxes, a couple of packages of mineral water, folding furniture and other trifles, worthless away from civilization. And if you load the same amount, the luggage will barely take half the free space.
My colleague is the first to drive behind the wheel, and while I am located behind. At first, it even seemed to me that Andrei is a newcomer at the wheel, but it turned out that only the left steering wheel was unusual for him: at home, a right-handed Japanese woman with an automaton. (There are more than half such machines in Altai. The influence of the East is affected.) Andrei quickly adapts to the patriot, confirming that there is no special skill to control this machine.
The cabin is relatively quiet and does not shake. But the air conditioner is frankly weak overboard plus 33, and in my back seat perhaps the degree is cooler. The second observation is much less pleasant why such an option is needed? I am escaping, opening the hatch in the roof now output at least some air movement.
My turn is going behind the wheel, and now it is clear why the colleague at first felt uncomfortable in the position of directly the steering wheel bites slightly and holding out considerable works within the strip. The gearing in the steering mechanism is clearly tattered. Looking ahead, I’ll say that during the run had a chance to travel on all the cars of our expedition, and they all behaved differently! It would seem that the factory conveyor should ensure a high repeatability of the result, and the car is like a Faberge egg: you will not find two identical ones. Even in the composition, the panel of the instrument panel of the door upholstery we counted six (!) Different shades and embossing options for plastic. They say it was eleven before.
THE MOUNTAINS
Seminsky pass (height 1800 m) on our part without steep turns and serpentines, so the assault is no different from the usual movement. At the top we are waiting for dinner and an overnight stay in the guest of the cedar.
Early morning. A cold motor (at a plus temperature) does not want to pull when trying to move sneezes and stalls. Well, do not run to the kitchen for boiling water. I warm up the engine on the spot only after that you can go. Modern injection needs warming up what kind of calibration? And what will it be in real frost?
In search of a successful perspective for shooting, I move from the road to the field and then, cursing, climbing into the grass raw from dew, turning on the front wheels only with the rear -wheel drive, the car does not go here. The fault of this, of course, is tires with an asphalt pattern. But all the presenters do their job Patriot easily crosses the green meadow and, along the wet, slippery roadside, is chosen on a solid.
We go to the Chica-Taman pass along a narrow crushed stone road. Oleg (the second barnaul in our crew) does not relax at the left at the wheel, but on the right, close to the road, the rock, ready to tear off the entire gloss of metallics from the barrel of the alternate.
Fortunately, we got to the top without loss, and I, for the sake of a beautiful frame, drive the patriot with the front wheel on the stone. The colleague climbed behind the camera in the trunk and ... could not open it busted the body!
After 200 kilometers, we turn onto the sandy road of the Kurai steppe. Lower the windows and hatch, turn on the ventilation to the complete dust in different ways. Behind each car stretches a 100-meter train, and only the side wind saves. Nevertheless, by evening, things in the trunk are covered with a generous layer of dust.
On the primer, where the speed is a hundred, the patriot goes softly, does not goat and even painlessly skipping transverse ditches, washed, apparently with streams. About thirty minutes later we go to the river and overcome several half -meter forces. Ahead is a steep climb along the mountain path.

But first, crossing the mountain river along a shaky wooden bridge with a bend in the middle. Schelling, the patriot and I overcome the log of the slope and safely crawl ashore.
Making my way between the stones and the roots of the trees, I stretch after the first machine. On the first reduced car, the car goes reluctantly, it requires a little to give, and this increases the minimum speed. Still, there is not enough traction on the bottoms, so necessary on off-road.
And you can’t rush. One wrong movement and the patriot will hang on the stones or break about them what is located below the frame. The body on the move is swinging the gas tanks under its thresholds of that and look will scrape through the stones. So it is: one car ripens the tank, irrigating the mountain path with gasoline. The protruding drain plug is torn with meat.

And why are they a civilian car, and even so unsuccessfully located? One, hidden in a safer place or at least protected as it should, would be much more appropriate.
The technician remains with the wounded, and the crew settles in other cars. Having spent almost an hour to overcome a seven -kilometer section, they got to the plateau located at an altitude of 2100 m. A deep river is in front, it is impossible to move further. On the shaky pedestrian bridge we move to the other side and soon go to the small mountain lake of the Sachka.
Dinner, an overnight stay in a house without light (a power station is launched for a short time to deliver here an invoice). Already in the darkness, a wounded patriot with a technician tank was pulled in by cold welding.
In the middle of the next day, having already made a foot ascending to the eternal snowy actr, we return to the cars and begin the descent into the valley. In time! The road and the stones become slippery. The car must be restrained all the time: if it is carried, not that the tanks are opened.
When we went down to the crossing, the rain spread in earnest. I had to crawl along these traveled slippery logs, returning them to their place after each car.
RETURN
They slipped through the steppe in the rain and, finally, broke out on the asphalt. Here you can turn off the hubs of the front axle hubs to save transmission, implying fuel saving. True, experienced UAZ owners have their own opinion. With disconnected hubs, the slots of a fixed cardan shaft wear out unevenly, and over time it begins to beat.
The journey is coming to an end, the last day is the most sad. Everything interesting is behind, and then rain charged in the morning. It's time to take stock.
None of the patriots for this mileage avoided replacing the gas pump and pulling the nuts on the wiper levers. Two cars under the pouring rain wipers completely turned off the fuses. There were no other problems.
The scatter of characteristics between serial patriots causes bewilderment: one is distinguished by a good, painful motor and less than the rest, gasoline consumption. But on it was the most noisy box, although it switched better than others.
The second, with a biting steering wheel, was not easy to keep within the strip. In the third, to turn on the handout, I had to cut a piece of plastic in the console. The fourth was remembered by a tight brake pedal and scanning when braking. The impression is that these cars were collected in the artel of the chubby artisans.
And at the same time, improvements in the character of the patriot are noticeable. All crews liked the new convenient seats a clear plus. None of the cars delivered the trouble with the cooling system. Updated brakes work better and more stable than the former unfortunately, again not on all machines.
But the Delphi hydraulic wrap instead of ZF replacement of an awl on soap. There are no obvious advantages, moreover, only one car of all did not scour in the strip. The air conditioner is clearly rather weak for a spacious salon: the option, frankly, for a box ... and prices: half a million rubles are quite consistent with the world level.
UAZ Patriot combines the cross -country ability and relative simplicity of a military UAZ with quite modern comfort and equipment (ABS, air conditioning, a hatch in the roof, etc.).
+ Excellent cross -country ability, spacious interior, huge trunk, comfortable seats, relatively low noise level, the ability to choose the right configuration.
- Low quality manufacturing as a whole, hanging tanks, manual connection of the front bridge, an individual set of malfunctions of each machine.
