New generation Toyota Avensis review compared to VW Passat

The struggle on equal terms between Toyota Avensis and VW Passat
Toyota intends to enter the German Premier League with the new Avensis. To begin with, it was decided to compare this car with VW Passat.
If the car manufacturer is developing a new model, in most cases its dimensions increase. But Toyota Avensis does not sin this. The chief designer of Takashi Yamamoto in no case wants to follow the trends of increasing obesity of cars: we strove to ensure that the new Avensis looked like an energetic swimmer, but not like a weightlifter. Therefore, the third -generation Avensis has grown quite modestly by only 5 centimeters.
Avensis is designed specifically for Europe
Like his ancestors, Avensis number three were born not in the country of the rising sun, but in Europe and especially for Europe. Toyota designers increased by several centimeters the distance between the front and the back of the body, and also gave the roof the shape of the arc.
Firstly, due to this, the salon has become more spacious, and secondly, a very high body waist line creates a dynamic silhouette. The Japanese not only abandoned the image of a middle-class city car, but also demonstrated an even higher level of requirements for the quality of their products, manufacturers focused mainly on the German Premier League. Therefore, for the first acquaintance with Avensis, VW Passat, the leader of this class of cars, was also invited.
Tangible potential of the Avensis salon
The number of Avensis body options has decreased: as before, a four-door sedan and a station wagon, which Toyota traditionally denotes the letter C. But in the image of a less popular 5-door hatchback Avensis, is offered.
Toyota boasts a dashboard of optitron with luminescent backlight, as in Lexus cars. Therefore, various readings on the Avensis panel are clearly visible, which can not be said about devices with a round scale and blue backlight by VW Passat. But when managing a German, you can more likely rely on intuition. Both VW and Toyota decided to abandon the classic manual brake to replace the parking brake system with electronic control.
The Japanese approached the issue of choosing finishing materials seriously and showed their skills. For the cabin, expensive materials of high quality were selected, which leaves the corresponding impression. There are plenty of spaces for the front seats in Avensis, as in Passat. However, people whose growth exceeds 180 cm are unlikely to be able to conveniently sit in Avensis'e the steering wheel is not advanced forward enough, and in addition, high seats are not enough depth.
In the VW salon, everything is different: even basketball players will feel comfortable in it. Moreover, a solid space is provided for the legs of passengers in the back seat, and a 565-liter luggage compartment is always ready to help transport things. Toyota trunk volume is also not small 509 liters. The settings of the chassis of the new Avensis have changed, it has become tougher. And although this increases the maneuverability of the car, the irregularities of the road surface do not allow passengers to feel comfortable.
Even the sporting running part of the VW configuration R-Line is much better in this regard. Another advantage of Passat's 140-horsepower TDI engine, which is 14 hp. Powerful than the D-4D motor in Toyota. In the Toyota diesel engine with the Common Rail system, an injection pressure of 2,000 bar is now used, this helps to reduce the release of harmful substances and reduce fuel consumption. So, during the first test, Avensis spent 5.9 liters per 100 km of run, but Passat required 6.2 liters of fuel.
If you compare the engines, then the Japanese turbodiesel reveals its potential a little slower, but it is more balanced and meets Euro-5 standards. In general, Avensis is a quiet car. Two more powerful diesel units 150 and 177 hp are also offered to choose from.
Profitable and safe
The basic equipment Toyota Avensis costs 24,950 euros, exactly 2,925 euros cheaper than the stock 140-horsepower Passat. In addition, Avensis is equipped with a driver’s safety pillow and a more complete set of equipment responsible for passive safety.
As a result, Avensis showed itself a worthy car, which has become more European than ever. He has a spacious salon, makes a much better impression and makes maneuvers more confidently. All this suggests that Avensis is quite ready to compete with German Premier League cars.
