The Toyota Avensis was born in October 1997 replaced the very popular Carina E. Avensis model - by no means a deep restyling of the old model, but a completely new car. Having become shorter by 40 mm, Avensis received a wheelbase increased by 50 mm, which positively affected the smoothness of the course. But continuity is felt in everything. True, those who were transplanted with Carina E on Avensis noted that for the sake of modern, more stringent requirements of ecologists, the latter engine was slightly strangled. All other innovations were only good to the car.

So, two additional levers appeared in the rear suspension, thanks to which the car became more stable. By the way, the elements of the suspension are characterized by rare durability even on our roads. The only or less weak link can be considered the bushings of the rear stabilizer, which may begin to tap after a run of 20 thousand km. However, this detail is not too expensive - $ 16 for 2 pieces + $ 40 for work. One of the common misconceptions of Avensis owners is that for this operation it is necessary to remove the rear subframe. Indeed, this is written in the repair manual. In fact, a competent auto mechanic is calm without it, doing all the work with an open key. The main thing is not to forget to tighten the attachment bolts with the necessary moment. By the method of performing this operation, the owner of Avensis will always be able to determine the level of qualification of the car mechanic. There are no complaints about similar elements of the front suspension, as well as to ball supports, levers of suspension, stabilizer racks and steering tips.
Confident gait.
On cars from the very first parties were problems with steering rods - the hinge itself quickly broke. Fortunately, this element is delivered separately, and the replacement of the steering rail is not required. It costs steering - $ 121.5 apiece, and another $ 150 will have to be given for work. The spare parts are now supplied with the steering rods of the already changed design, and therefore the next replacement will not be required soon. There is another claim to the steering Avensis. Sometimes, when turning the steering wheel to large corners, a light tapping is felt, and the sound is heard, as if something is rolling. No need to be scared. The fact is that, unlike Carina, Avensis has a floating element in the form of a slot compound in the design of the lower steering cardan, which should be packed with plastic lubricant. But either at the factory in England they did not report a lubricant, or something was not guessed with its composition ... The problem is solved by re-stuffing of lubrication: 15 minutes and $ 10. If you will be bred to replace the steering column, which costs $ 700, it is better to contact a company service, where it has long been aware of this problem.
The front Avensis place from the first parties were the front brake discs that are prone to crust, especially if, after a series of intense braking, flying into a puddle. While the residual thickness of the disks allows, the problem can be solved with a groove that will cost $ 60 per side. When the norm is chosen in thickness, the discs will have to be changed - $ 164 per disc and another $ 70 for manipulations with it. By the way, brake discs that have already got rid of this defect go into spare parts, so if the means allow, it is better to change it immediately as soon as the beating on the steering wheel appears during braking.
Light cold.
From annoying trifles, it is worth noting the elements of heating seats that stop working - more often, of course, on the driver's seat. It is treated only by replacement - $ 355 for the element itself and $ 120 - for work. If a strange noise is heard when the fan of the stove is turned on, you don’t need to change anything - just a garbage is piled into the hole for the outdoor air. Unfortunately, the protective mesh of this hole appeared on Avensis only after reinstailing in the fall of 2000. And on the predecessors you need to unscrew three self -tapping screws and clean the accumulated garbage. By the way, if the car does not have a salon air filter, then it is better to install it, since there is a place for it in any option - a hatch in the console near the gas pedal. And then monitor his condition - 10 thousand km to blow and change every 30 thousand km.
Strong stomach.
Avensis supplied to our market were equipped with one of three engines-4A-FE gasoline (1.6-liter with a capacity of 110 hp), 3S-FE (2-liter capacity of 130 hp) or 2C-te ( 2-liter with a capacity of 90 hp). The option with a gasoline engine 7A-FE (1.8-liter with a capacity of 110 hp) was also delivered to European countries. In addition, at the very beginning of sales in the Russian market there was a batch of cars with a 4a-Fe engine, adapted to work on 92nd gasoline, without a catalyst and lambda-zond. There was also no ABS in this configuration. All engines are very reliable and perfectly digest our fuel. Even the failure of lambda-zond due to refueling with poor-quality gasoline is an extremely rare thing. This is for the better, since he is very expensive - $ 167 + $ 25 for work. Candles, however, in our conditions have to be changed twice as often than prescribed by the instructions. Instead of the laid 20 thousand km, they rarely nurse more than 10 thousand. And the candles are expensive, platinum - $ 20 per piece. We categorically do not advise, with independent maintenance, experiments with varieties and coolant brands are needed - only original is needed. The pouring of the antifreeze can lead to the leak of the pump. By the way, having looked when buying Avensis under the hood, you can determine the true age of the machine - the release date is on high -voltage wires, which practically do not require replacement. In the same place, under the hood, you can understand whether there was a frontal collision in the history of the machine. On the transverse metal bar, which is located between the radiator cladding and the radiator itself, in the factory version, a certain internal index is knocked out in large numbers, which does not particularly matter. But: on the same element that enters the spare parts, such marking is absent.
Healthy skeleton.
Avensis came to our market with an adapted suspension, all changes in which were reduced to an extra round on springs and shock absorbers with an increased diameter of the rod. This package for bad roads only lifts the body over the road a couple of centimeters and does not affect the size of the road clearance, since all the lower points of the suspension remained in old places. So the presence of this package is not a reason to rush through the pits. To maintain mental calm, it is good to immediately put the metallic protection of the crankcase, since the plastic factory protects only from dirt. But you will have to choose among the products of Russian craftsmen, since there is no such position in the list of Toyota accessories. For a well-cut sheet of iron, on which the loops coincide with factory seating, you will have to pay $ 100-120. In addition, it is worthwhile to carefully monitor the condition of the anthers. Timely replacement of a set of anthers for $ 98 will save almost $ 700 for the bar itself assembly.
