Why pay more?The second generation of Skoda Fabia was presented at the auto show in Geneva in March 2007. So far, only a hatchback has been updated, and Fabia Sedan and Combi are still offered with an old body. The new Fabia does not resemble the previous generation little, but what else has changed in Skoda, in addition to design? To answer this question, we took the Skoda Fabia 1.4 in the ambitious configuration of Sport to the test drive.
It has long been known that compact urban cars should be bright, saturated colors. It’s cheerfully yellow stain on the dirty sludge snow that is the first sensation of the new Fabia. The cunning squint of the headlights, like the trailer of Skoda Roomster, the invisible black racks of a la Mini Cooper also inspired Suzuki Swift. But, despite quoting, the car looks fresh and even fashionable. The hatchback grew 22 mm in length and 48 mm in height. But, as it turned out, not only in dimensions
Hearing the cost of the machine, I want to ask again: how much?! 24,500 dollars?! Yes, our Fabia with a 1.4-liter engine and mechanics plus additional equipment wound a meter to an amount that is not a pity to give for a well-equipped golf-class model! Moreover, Mazda3 or Opel Astra will have approximately the same options of cast discs, stabilization system, windows, cruise control (Lord, why is he here?), Parctronics, music with MP3, climate control and even rotary headlights, of course, good, good, good But Fabia still remains a small machine with a modest engine, but its price took off to heaven. Yes, and nothing athletic, except for a leather three -spoke steering wheel and seats with lateral support, is not observed here.
But the seats are good! To get in them with comfort and choose a convenient landing, there will be no difficulty, there is even an adjustment in height. The steering wheel is tuned in two planes in a very large range, but the horizontal joystick of the mirror settings did not like the shaky video is not so easy to give the mirrors the right position. The steering wheel switches are somewhat overloaded: in addition to the usual functions, it is also entrusted with the control of the on-board computer and cruise control is the branded feature of all Volkswagen cars. The plastic is expectedly hard. Only once from somewhere a cricket sang, but, apparently ashamed of his inappropriateness in a solid German salon, quickly fell silent. It is difficult to hide that Fabia is focused on girls, but then why is the make-up mirror under the driver's visor is lost, did they save, at such a price? It’s good at least a huge eyebrush between the visors did not forget. Fabia has two glove boxes, but both are very small, but the lower one has cooling.
The most serious claim to ergonomics is an unsuccessful armrest between the seats. Removing the car from the parking brake is inconvenient well even if the armrest leans back, taking a vertical position. Near the handbrake there is a connector for connecting the IPOD MP3-player, but the radio itself, despite the numerous settings, sounds quite mediocre, which corresponds to the status of the machine, but does not correspond to its price.
So, it is time to join the city stream and dilute the slush a little bright yellow! The thrown blade of the key, in the best traditions of Volkswagen, turns a 1.4-liter motor with a capacity of 86 hp. For us, the movement began in the rear, where the optional parking sensors showed himself in the entire paint, in addition to the sound signal, he displays the schematic distance to the obstacle on the radio display and shows which side the threat to wait. Although without it there are no complaints about visibility, and the dimensions of the car are less than 4 meters, which does not cause special problems in the parking lot.
The gas pedal is completely weightless, at first I even want to doubt its presence. The same light and lever of transfers, and the moves are very small and clear. He will enjoy even sporting oriented men if they suddenly find themselves behind the wheel of Fabia.
The brake pedal is also tuned to very tenderly inaccurate pressing on it can turn into an unpleasant surprise for both passengers and drivers moving behind.
The Euro-4 strangled by the norms of the Euro-4 sluggishly pulls on the bottoms, but after 3,000 rpm picks up cheerfully and with a rumbling, from which noise insulation does not save, fervently carries a light machine forward. The mirrors in a yellow frame not only delight the eyes against the background of a rainy road, but also differ in good visibility. The suspension is a European, but because of the small mass of bedridled police officers and even the Fabia tram tracks jumping surprisingly softly. Even greater comfort can be achieved if you abandon the optional 16-inch wheels with low-profile tires in favor of 15-inch more appropriate on a small machine. Fabia is controlled very sharply, but at the same time safe. The reactions to the deviations of the lamb are lightning fast, but it is almost impossible to send Skoda to the skid, even if you deactivate the stabilization system: the car is distinguished by pronounced insufficient rotation.
Fabia digested well and high speeds are quite suitable for distant voyage, but such tests are given with difficulty after 130 km/h the fuel consumption increases exponentially, and it is better to forget about overtaking at such speed. With a calm ride, Fabia is quite economical if not dashing, then in the city it is easily managed to fit 8 liters per hundred, but so to ride a machine with a sharp wheel, and even such a bright color is boring, and when driving, the consumption jumps up to 10- 12 liters per 100 km. Of course, you should not talk about drivelings of a 1.4-liter motor, but the sensation of driving is very dynamic, and the brisk and maneuverable machine itself attracts the eyes of neighbors in the stream.
The trunk compared to the previous generation increased from 260 to 300 liters, and with folded seats, its volume is 1163 liters. By the way, under the floor is not a dock, but a full -size reserve. In the back seat you can seize three passengers, although it is unlikely that they will feel very comfortable. But two, if, of course, they are not two meters tall, they will accommodate pretty well.
Of course, it is not necessary to have 637,000 rubles to approach the new Skoda: the cost of the basic version with a 1.2-liter 70-horsepower engine and a 5-speed mechanical transmission starts from 339,000 rubles. True, this price includes only one airbag and steering wheel amplifier. In the Ambiente configuration, which is more expensive than 40,000 rubles, there is ABS, an on -board computer, heating the front seats and a second pillow. Air conditioning and music will have to be ordered separately. The machine is offered only with a 1.6 -liter engine and only performed by Elegance. The price is sky -high from 543,000 rubles. But Sport, which visited the test with us, for some reason allocated only a modest 1.4-liter engine. The price of such a machine without additional equipment is 449,000 rubles.
So those who want Fabia, and even in a good configuration and with a machine gun, will have to seriously fork out. Such immodest price tags finally deprive Fabia of the once very successful positioning Available Volkswagen. With updating the Skoda lineup risks finally to lose the latest customers. If during the time of Felicia, and then the first generation of Octavia and Fabia, the Czech company could fight for sales leadership on equal terms, now the brand was fixed only in the second ten and there are no prospects for the growth of special ones. You can understand what the sellers of Spanish seats for design are asking for a lot of money, the Germans from Volkswagen promise quality, Audi respectability, and for what to pay Skoda dealers is completely incomprehensible
