Test drive Opel Frontera Stagger 1998 - 2004 SUV

Official compliance

Updated Opel Frontera for almost four years. And he is still not complained of in the Russian market. What is the reason? Let's try to find out.

Opel Frontera was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1991 and was a well -Europeized version of the Japanese Isuzu SUV. The model was produced with two types of body - a short -drawn three -door and long -leading five -door - and for a long time differed little from the prototype.

But in 1998, an updated car appeared. Outwardly, he looks like his predecessor, but almost all the details of the exterior changed. Having become more rounded, Frontera, contrary to the existing opinion that the jeep should be square, looks much more spectacular than before. Restyling was a success: the car today does not seem old -fashioned.

You can’t call the salon with ultramodern, but people who are accustomed to value practicality in the car will like it here.

A modest but informative combination of devices. Clear icons on switches. A little archaic, but a very convenient heater control lever. A small but in the right place display of a route computer. Simple -looking radio. Everything is unpretentious, but comfortably and sets up in a good way.

Chairs, as before, are low. Planting the driver and passengers is more sports than gigiper. However, as practice has shown, you quickly get used to it.

In a five -door modification, unlike a three -door, the luggage compartment door opens in two stages: you throw up the glass part, then open the lower side. The solution is not new, but justified - why, due to the chips package, pull a heavy door with a reserve, if you can limit yourself to a window? Trunk volume - 518 liters; With folded rear seats - 1790.

So far, we have not found serious reason to love this car. Maybe running badly?

We start the engine. The 205-horsepower V-shaped six is \u200b\u200balmost inaudible. The machine easily accelerates to 100 km/h in 10 seconds. The main thing is to stick the next program in time. Frontera’s audit of the scenes is quite high, and finding the desired step is not difficult.

Dose the force on the brake pedal is very simple. The only thing that is somewhat annoying is the car's nose bit in the last stage of braking. But this is rather the merit of the suspension. Long-flowing enough, it, in principle, cannot behave differently, but with enviable zeal, she protects passengers from attacks of different-caliber bumps. Even if it is sometimes shaking, it is slight. In corners, the car is very rushing, which, however, does not become a surprise.

On off -road, as it should be jeep, Frontera easily copes with any task. During the test, we have never resorted to the help of a lowering gear - there was enough full -wheel drive. It is turned on by the button from the cabin at speeds up to 100 km/h.

No matter how we tried, this Opel did not find serious flaws. Why did our motorists rode him incomplete service? Most likely, by the inertia of thinking: the previous machine did not differ in a high level of comfort and reliability. But how many years have passed! It's time to review the personal file of the suspect.
