Test drive Nissan Patrol LWB 1998 - 2004 SUV

Time of conservatives

There are very few of them - strong all -terrain vehicles with a dependent front suspension. Who are they: clumsy dinosaurs of the past era or worthy successors of traditions?

Whose legend is more beautiful?
Is the Slavic cabinet for sale here? No, the spy lives a floor above ... In this class of cars, legend is no less important than among professional scouts. Fortunately, both candidates have something to tell.
The story of the brand jeep, according to its current owner, the company Daimler-Coisler, has more than 60 years. The first Willis-Sovereland was released on July 23, 1941. Although Mark Jeep itself was registered only in 1950, so its life path is almost a decade shorter. These half a century thoroughly changed the appearance of an all -wheel drive warriors - from a plain army bone of Kostotryas without a roof and doors, it turned into a comfortable and purely civilian car of increased cross -country ability. Compare the WillisMb times of the Second World War and the Jeep Grane Cheroka: of the common features, they have all all-wheel drive and seven vertical cracks on the radiator cladding.
The story of Nissan -Patrol also has more than half a century, although, unlike the jeep, the first patrol of the 1951 model was not owed to the military - those cars were the greatest demand among farmers and construction companies. A decade later, a more comfortable option appeared, very similar to the current model, it lasted without radical changes until 1980. The next generation lasted until 1988, and in 1998 the period of a modern patrol came.

Tasks and design
A real alternate is, first of all, dependent pendants and a frame. Half a century of experience convinced that in difficult conditions only such a combination can ensure reliability and durability. Bridges in front and back may not allow to achieve record values \u200b\u200bof the road clearance, but the suspension moves are not a couple independent, and the units are reliably protected. No rubber anthers and ball supports - everything is simple and iron. The issue with elastic elements is resolved - the springs finally defeated leaf springs. Comfort and handling can be provided only by a carefully selected ratio of numerous levers and rods. The highlight of the Nissana -Patrol is an automatically disconnected stabilizer of the far stability behind. Pressing the button - already impressive moves of the rear suspension become completely fantastic.
Also, the frame - you need to see how it breathes when the suspension is operating to understand what loads the car experiences on a crossed area. A real torture for a load -bearing body with meager gaps of doorways and glued glasses. But we will not be unnecessarily dramatized: experts will not fail to remind you that the Jeep Grand Cheroki just carries the body.
Formally, they are right. But, having looked under the jeep, you will immediately notice powerful spars along the entire length of the car - it is still more like a frame welded to the bottom ...
However, in size they are also not classmates: Nissan is almost half a meter longer, 100 mm wider and higher. Therefore, in it, without any tricks, it was possible to place three rows of seats. But in the landing of the driver there is a lot in common - in both cars it is closer to the passenger than the bus. The difference is that Nissan-Patrol sitting behind the wheel is almost a head higher.

Collection of errors
A powerful, burdened diesel adapts perfectly to a change in the load - a common phrase from the dough in any automobile edition. Each of them, to the best of the forces, contributed to the strengthening of the next myth. The low -speed diesel engines of an impressive volume without boost, completely indifferent to the load, remained in the distant past. Their successors are easier, more powerful, more economical, but ... have a much narrower working range. And only the gasoline engine of a solid volume with a relatively moderate degree of forceout can combine the scrap draft from the idle to the red line of the tachometer to the red line of the tachometer. And no boost ... In America they have known this for a long time. Do not believe? Then try to find a modern turbodiesel in reference literature, which has 90% of the torque achieved in a wide range of revolutions ... You can hardly find. And the gasoline engine is easy, and it is cheaper in production. But the prices of fuel in Europe do not give any chances to multi -leaf gasoline engines - all their appetite is guilty.
Our wards also do not complain about him: the average consumption for the test of both cars at least a little, but exceeded an important psychological mark of 20 l/100 km. Of course, in the measured movement along the highway, the consumption is reduced to more acceptable 12-15 liters per hundred, but those who like to step on gas may well trash the arrows on the level of the level.
The machine is not for off -road - another rooted myth. We will not talk about heavy raids in uninhabited places, but in real life there is more benefit from it than harm. The improper selection of transmission is excluded, touching on a slippery coating is improved, an extra damper appears in the transmission that softens shock loads when the car exceeds the tubercles and pit. And in order not to boil it in really difficult conditions, there is a lowering transmission and temperature sensor. By the way, burning ordinary clutch, trying to get out of dirt, is much easier ...

WHAT IS INSIDE?
A chic salon with leather chairs equipped with an electric drive and heating, a wooden front panel and even steering wheel, an automatic climatic installation, an expensive audio system - all this is in both machines. But the jeep is somewhat ahead of the general decoration and saturation with additional equipment. The advantage of gave the on -board computer on the ceiling console, separate climate control, rain sensor on windshield and mobile transverse arches on roof religions. We have already met the Gran of the Second generation Cheroki (ZR, 2000, No. 12), and then its salon turned out to be very spacious even for a high driver. This time a little different data turned out. The hatch is to blame - he ate about 50 mm above the driver’s head, so drivers above 190 cm will have to look for compromises in landing.
To surprise, the much more voluminous Nissan Patrol Gr/›Nissan Patrol does not provide high drivers of advantages. The limits of adjustments of the front seats immediately remind of the Japanese origin of the car. You can drive up to the steering wheel almost closely, but it will not work far enough to leave. However, only those who are higher than 190 cm and, moreover, long -legged, will experience problems.
The impressive length of the salon allowed to place three rows of seats in the patrol, and two folding places in the trunk are not at all children. The middle row can move back and forth by 100 mm. In its front position, the seats of the third row are quite suitable for adult growth up to 180 cm. But then the rest of the passengers should not be higher. If it is required to create comfort five above average, then only children will be convenient in the third row.

On the roads and without them
Our on-duty set for tests today is this: city streets of all stripes, from multi-row prospects to lanes, clogged somehow parked cars, pretty spent by asphalt moth of a suburban highway, a piece of decent highway. And also ... a motocross route, barely thawing under the spring sun.
The first to go to the route is Gran Cheroki. In narrow alleys, he is quite comfortable, only when parking in constrained conditions was lamented on a noticeably larger radius of rotation than that of a passenger car. It is not a question to leave the first from a traffic light - only those who have more than 200 horses under the hood of an ordinary car can compete with a jeep. The rest only briefly see the w8 4.7l Ho: High Output - a corporate designation of the forced motor. The automatic gearbox used with it is also not devoid of originality - she has ... the two second transmishes. The first second is used for normal acceleration, and the other is when the gas pedal is pressed to the stop. But even if you count the second transmissions for one, there are still five steps, two of them are overdrave. This is where the designers can lead the requirements for reducing the flow!
Having gained cruiser 100 km/h, the Cheroki Grand Processing appetite up to 12 l/100 km and turns into a kind of limousine - fast, comfortable and silent. The driver and passengers remains to have fun for all the arsenal of electronics: cruise control, a separate climate installation remote control, an audio system with a CD changer, an on-board computer with a car preliminary menu. The interface of such an extensive economy is so simple that you can not spend time reading the leadership.
However, maintaining a high pace on a winding road driving a jeep is not so simple. In the normal range of speeds of his reaction, it is quite predictable, but after 130 km/h, not the best features appear, especially on the waves of the coating. On the delay of the steering wheel, cranes of the body, seasoned with a noticeable skateboard-effect, are applied. In combination with road low -profile tires with a small departure, the explosive mixture is directly ... And if you consider that thanks to a powerful motor, the car plays 180 km/h, then our conclusion is seriously exceeding the chassis. On even roads, the situation is much better - high speeds are quite permissible, and steering has a clear reactive effect. But it is difficult to evaluate a slowdown - there is too little effort on the pedal. However, in extreme cases, ABS with an electronic distribution of brake forces will help out.
So we approached the most interesting: we go to the thawed cross route. The preparation is not required - the Cheroki Gran, like a pioneer, is always ready for the assault on the road. The Quadra Drive II system under normal conditions conveys the most part of the torque to the rear wheels, but is capable of transferring it to the front bridge in a split second. And thanks to self -locking differentials, a jeep can move if at least one wheel has something to catch on. Lack of torque? This does not happen with reduced gear 2.72: 1. Cheroki grabs the Gran cheroki with ease, despite the purely road tires. But his geometric patency is unimportant: on the bending too early it begins to struck the protection of the distribution box. No wonder - under it is less than 200 mm, and it hangs just in the middle of the base. Trying to overcome irregularities from the course, one must be careful - the energy intensity of pendants is small. Its is quite enough for asphalt defects, but far from the deepest pits on the primer are already causing the operation of the move limiters. Hardly reptile stabilizers that reduce the rolls in corners have become a natural limiter of suspension moves.
At the wheel of Nissan-Patrol, even familiar lanes are U'zhe. Extended wheeled niches make it be very careful during close travels. But the maneuverability of the car seems quite sufficient. No wonder, because with noticeably large dimensions, the radius of rotation of Nissan is only more than that of the jeep.
The impressive dimensions are by no means minus in potentially conflict situations. And the speakers are enough to confidently occupy strategic positions before intersections and forks. Only for traffic lights, it is perhaps not enough, and although Nissan’s engine diligently apologizes for the impressive mass of the car, but to turn a 2.5-ton all-wheel drive into a sports car is still not able to.
On the Nissan Patrol GR/›Nissan Patrol, it easily reaches 150 km/h, further overclocking is given with noticeable labor. However, this speed is enough to understand: high speed is not his element. Nissan pendants at first seem quite soft, but this feeling is deceptive. Pits and potholes are very sensitive to sciatic. However, do not forget - pendants are designed for 3/4 tons of load. However, on a more or less good road, any small things are perfectly swallowed by tires of serious size 275/70R16.
The motocross route is waiting for us again. Before the assault, do not forget to connect the front bridge - Nissan -Patrol does not have the center differential, and it is contraindicated for the asphalt with all -wheel drive. Fans to save fuel and look for adventures on ... The driver’s seat can even disconnect the couplings of the front wheels, just like on UAZ ... To complete mobilization of forces, they use a reduced gear, a rigid blocking of the rear inter -normal differential and the rear stabilizer release. Thanks to the huge moves of the suspension and an impressive lumen in the middle of the base, the long and clumsy -looking Nissan easily takes obstacles, inaccessible Gran of Cheroki. Although with the blocked rear differential you need to be able to handle - the car turns the car on the slope.

Fern the dad
So, the Cheroki jeep-grane was stronger in road disciplines and easier in management on slippery roads. Nissan Patrol Gr/›Nissan Patrol is significantly lags behind in dynamics, but more than thoroughly wins in capacity, carrying capacity and cross -country ability. It seems that the Cheroki Gran never decided who he should be - a high -speed SUV, rival with BMW X5, or an uncompromising all -terrain vehicle that continues the glorious traditions of Willis. But they are almost convinced - in the next generation this car will finally gain confidence and will finally rush into the asphalt jungle, armed with independent pendants.
A powerful Nissana -patrol gasoline engine is only an element of increasing comfort. Less noise, better dynamics, everything is good for the consumer. As for expenses - the one who pays 60 thousand green for the car will find a thousand rubles for a full tank. And the character and breed from the patrol cannot be pulled out: both with a diesel engine and a gasoline engine is a serious all -around, ready to steadfastly tolerate the difficulties of the most difficult roads.
