Test Drive Jeep Cherokee (Liberty) 2001 - 2005 SUV

Pulls on nature

The new Diesel Jeep Cherokee 2.8L CRD Power Tech has the best traction characteristics and the largest torque in its class.

Increasingly, lovers of SUVs pay attention to cars with a diesel engine. High torque, moderate fuel consumption and, as a result, a large stroke stock cannot be impressed by those who spend a lot of time away from civilization. Naturally, automakers noticed this trend and include diesel modifications in programs.

At one time, Chrysler also equipped Cherokee diesel 2.5 and a mechanical five-speed gearbox. But this time we have to evaluate the abilities of the machine with a 2.8-liter engine and automatic KP.

Recall, Jeep Cherokee refers to the rapidly developing class of so-called parquets, or, scientifically, SUV. However, the framework, the possibility of choosing between the rear and complete drives, blocking the inter-axis differential, lowering the transmission and high clearance allow you to attribute a car to the class of real or almost real SUVs. At the same time, Cherokee will not force the crew to suffer from a lack of comfort: the package includes a leather interior, an impressive electric car, cruise control, a route computer ...

The operating engine surprised, as it seemed, incredibly loud sound. On the street, he dissolves in general noise, but he could still be hiding. When you speak with a person standing in some distance from the car, his words should practically not disassemble. Another thing is if the interlocutors are in the cabin. The hum of the unit here is also listened, but only as an easy, completely tolerant background.

The car has a very decent dynamics. We will not cut out, many overtook us, but only those who drove on gasoline. But among the solarium brethren of comparable class, not to mention the trucks and commercial transport, there was no equal car.

As the measurements were shown, Cherokee with a 148-strong engine in the city is satisfied with eleven liters of diesel fuel, and on the track costs a family.

A stock feels on the highway under the gas pedal. Considerable merit is that the car is well accelerated even on a decent speed, belongs to the gearbox. Kick-down is triggered almost immaculately. The hitch with a sharp blending accelerator pedal is felt, but lasts only a moment. I liked that the work of the turbine is practically no felt motor pulls exactly, without failures and pickups. The peak of the torque equal to 360 nm is achieved already at 2000 min-1.

On off-road it is quite by the way. For all the time that we spent on the side of the asphalt, we did not have to take advantage of the services of the downward transmission quite enough of the usual full drive so that in the tension to overcome the risks of the rut or climb on the high steep slope. The maximum that we did, the automaton selector was set to the L position corresponding to the first transmission (so that the CP did not shift on the next one). However, the concerns were in vain box adequately reacts to off-road modes. Blocking the inter-axis differential is also not needed.

Surgoing all the surrounding puddles, typing all the nearest slides and fracturing all the dried bushes, we conclude that the new diesel engine is very suitable for this car. The main merit of the motor is that Cherokee has become more dynamic and more powerful, although it is equipped with an automatic, not mechanical transmission.
