Car journalists are like children. Give me a machine, and the first thing you want to do is to drive it. The type of vehicle is not important for them, whether it is a sports car or a forest car with a trailer of whips. And do not hesitate that the first verdict that they will endure will be: rides or does not go.

The new Ford Ranger was not an exception. It did not even save the fact that the organizers of the test in the first lines reminded the genealogy truck. Indeed, the world's first serial pickup was created in 1919 on the basis of the legendary Ford T, and the Ford 46 model, which appeared in the 1930s, was popular among farmers, and called a farmer pickup. But, to be honest, the new Ford Ranger himself provokes that not only its utilitarian qualities are subjected to verification. As for the exterior, you can only summarize the hidden. The car looks more stylish and even brutally compared to its predecessor, but this brutality is not without intelligence. In general, the image turned out to be harmonious and characteristic. I mean, with a fighting character. And the pickup has become almost 200 mm longer, 43 mm wider and 65 mm higher. But still, the salon was the main provocateur. What a farm pickup there! Ford Ranger interior at the level of a rather decent SUV. Without much luxury, strict, but with excellent ergonomics. It was convenient and comfortable for the driver and passenger on the front seats, the back row passengers became more spacious (certainly not a Pikapov topic). Compared to the previous model, the number of equipping options has been increased, and the basic options at all levels of sets have been improved. And from here, criticism about the hard plastic of the front panel and doors somehow quickly forget about the same initially utilitarian purpose of the car. But, probably, this is the right Ranger from us are by no means bought by farmers.

Now about electronics. In the database, all settings are equipped with ESP exchange rate stability systems, the distribution of the EBD brake force and, of course, the ABS anti-lock system through which all systems for assisting the driver are adjusted. In addition, the ESP package can be equipped with options such as the system control system, the aid system for starting on the rise, the adaptive load control system, and the trajectory control system of the trajectory. If necessary, the systems not only brake the corresponding wheels, stabilizing the machine, but also through the engine control module they reduce the torque and limit the speed. All this also applies to movement with the trailer: as soon as the connector joins, the ESP function adapts to the movement of the road train. In general, about electronic assistants to the driver who can be equipped with a new Ranger, we can say a lot of all of them can work both according to a single algorithm and in electoral versions, taking into account the speed of the car and the angle of rise.


Good. Well, what is this farm pickup?

As for the chassis, the designers faced a difficult task. This is the whole thing in the positioning of the car: as already mentioned, Ford Ranger is unlikely to threaten the fate of becoming a hundred percent farmer pickup with constant use of capacity. By the way, if we talked about the carrying capacity, then the numbers are really impressive: the Ranger can tow a trailer weighing 3.5 tons and, thus, the total mass of a loaded car train can be almost 6 tons. But with a minimum loading, a pickup trip, according to its creators, should be quite comfortable. The rear suspension modified with an unreasonable bridge remained the same, but the front was seriously modernized: double transverse levers of new design, instead of torsion now telescopic racks of shock absorbers with springs. Compared to the previous model, the new Ranger has the best course stability, the balance between comfort and the rigidity of the suspension has improved. True, lovers to drive and here noted the very nervous behavior of the car on uneven asphalt. And what to be surprised? Rolter the not at all the perfect weighting of the pickup with an empty body on springs on, albeit a well -tuned, but rather rigid front suspension, and you will get the most unstable behavior of the machine when driving at speed per hundred. This is on the asphalt. And if under the wheels it is not asphalt, but loose soil or snow-ice coating, here the electronic stabilization systems will be very useful. Nevertheless, the controllability of the new Ranger clearly changed for the better: the car has become more obedient, and the vertical movements characteristic of the previous model became much less.

As for the off -road qualities of the new Ford Ranger, ideologically, everything is quite transparent here: a constant rear -wheel drive with a connected front bridge and the presence of a lowering row in a handout. At the same time, constructively, the full -wheel drive system is quite new, it is optimized by ESP. Switching modes is carried out using a washer located on the central console. Moreover, all -wheel drive can be connected during movement, at speeds up to 120 km/h. But the locking of the center differential here is not if necessary, its function is performed by the same ESP system that controls the operation of the brake mechanisms. By the way, in some markets, blocking is one of the options, but this does not apply to Russia.


Who is who you can see right away: a 2.2-liter diesel with a 6-speed manual transmission

Good equipment, comfort and off -road qualities (the latter can add a road clearance of 229 mm and the possibility of overcoming an armor up to 800 mm deep) all this is on the new Ford Ranger, undoubtedly present. But one of the most important updates was the line of engines. Three power units will be represented on the Russian market. A 4 -cylinder Duratec gasoline 2.5 liters issues 166 liters to the mountain. With. (The previous Ranger was available only with diesel engines). The motor is ready to work on liquefied or compressed gas with the addition of up to 85% ethanol, as well as on gasoline with the addition of ethanol, an option quite popular in a number of markets. Structurally, this is an already familiar engine with a volume of 2.3 liters, which is installed on the Galaxy, S-Max and Mondeo model, but this version has increased cylinders diameter and piston stroke. The motor is aggregated only with a mechanical 5-speed KP and has enviable elasticity: the maximum torque shelf is in the range from 2200 to almost 5000 min-1. Just what you need for a car of such a segment. This is a kind of prelude to racers: the motor is by no means peppy, and for active driving, the cululis of the Communist Party will have to work shock. But is it necessary? And at the fuel consumption, this will certainly affect the way, about efficiency. According to the passport, the fuel consumption of a gasoline engine in a mixed cycle of movement is 10.8 liters per 100 km, and on the highway 8.9, but during the test, it turned out more comfort for all comfort.


The salon does not impress the cabin of a purely utilitarian car

Our verdict
Pickup ... utilitarianism ... lacks a keyword for a clear definition. Perhaps universality? Or an active lifestyle? maybe. The presence of a suburban house, a trip to hunting and fishing all these are points in favor of a decision to have a Ranger. Provided that this is not the only car in the family.
