Test drive Ford Ranger: Now with automatic transmission

For the first time, Ranger with an automatic transmission, which was borrowed from the Explorer SUV, was represented in Russia at the International Motor Show in Moscow, held in September last year.

Our first acquaintance with the new Ford Ranger took place at the end of 2009. Even then, Ford promised to please Russian fans of pickups with an automatic transmission as soon as possible. Despite the good sales results at that time, the automatic transmission was necessary for the ranger as air. Moreover, the few competitors, including Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan Navara, already had such, and the appearance of new Volkswagen Amarok and Toyota Hilux players was around the corner.

I had to wait a whole year. At the end of 2010, Ford announced Ranger with automatic transmission and even organized a separate presentation. We did not fail to take this opportunity, and we, taking the Ford Ranger from the automatic transmission for a test drive. So, for a whole week, the CarClub editor was a Ford Ranger pickup with a 2.5-liter diesel, an automatic gearbox in a rich line in Limited.

Ford Ranger with automatic transmission is available only in the Limited configuration, a distinctive feature of which are chrome thresholds, the rear bumper and the cargo compartment frame.

Ascetic salon, practical hard plastic, archaic design of the front panel If for a modern car, these qualities are unacceptable, then the pickupa is just right. The landing is not bad, the chairs adjusting the adjustment ranges, the steering column is regulated only along the angle of inclination. The rear row in the Double Cab cabin does not shine with a capacity, but it will quite come true for traveling to Dalnyak, which was proved by our trip to Karelia to the Mazda BT-50 (analogue of Ford Ranger).

Despite the five -meter length, Ford Ranger is able to maneuver well in the city. This is facilitated by good visibility and the presence of parking sensors that significantly facilitate the movement of reversing. Of the minuses when driving in a metropolis, you can note too much cargo steering wheel, which is why in corners the steering wheel has to work much more actively.

The cabin has practical hard plastic. There are few ergonomic punctures: the main of them is the lack of adjustment of the steering column by departure. Of the other inconvenience, we note the small volume of the windshield washer tank.

Passport 14.7 seconds to 100 km/h do not inspire optimism. This is as much as 2.2 seconds more data for a car with a manual. Meanwhile, a 2.5-liter diesel traction is not deprived. 143 hp And 330 Nm of torque is quite enough so as not to get lost in the city stream.

For the first time, Ranger with an automatic transmission, which was borrowed from the Explorer SUV, was represented in Russia at the International Motor Show in Moscow, held in September last year. With the exception of a jerk transition from the first to the second 5-speed automatic, the speed clicks smoothly. Apparently, these are the consequences of adaptation of the transmission under the diesel unit. I remember, and with a mechanical transmission, it was not always possible to go with a short first to the second without a jerk. When overtaking at speed, switching to a lowered delay occurs, but this does not cause obvious inconvenience. Confident acceleration continues up to 130-140 km/h, after which the ardor of the diesel engine fades away. Although what is available is quite enough.

For Ford Ranger, only one 2.5-liter turbodiesel engine with a capacity of 143 hp is available. A 5-speed mechanics can work in pairs with the engine, and since the end of 2010 to Russia, they finally began to supply cars with automatic transmission, which was so lacking to combat the main competitors in the pickup segment.

Automatic transmission has three modes of restrictions on the speeds used, which can be useful, for example, when towing the trailer, as well as the O/D (overdrive) function, turning off the fifth speed. As a result, the box is almost before cutting off each transmission, improving the conditions for overtaking.

The direct Ford Ranger is not bad, however, during the restructuring, it disappoints the weak information content of the steering, which also has too smeared with a cargo zero. For the same reason, the Ford pickup does not like sharp maneuvers, although the rolls are small in the bend. Do not forget to slow down in front of the lying policemen, the elastic spring suspension is springing so that passengers in the back row take the risk of reaching the ceiling to the ceiling. But the energy intensity is excellent. 16-inch discs with tires 235/70 R16 and large passages swallow pits and bumps of any caliber. Only shaking shaking on small irregularities, but it is on an empty one. You can add to the Ranger of the smoothness by simply loading the body. By the way, Ford's carrying capacity is one of the best in class. With a body size of 1530 x 1456 mm in modification with a double cabin Double Cab, it can take on board up to 1140 kg.

Ford Ranger the only pickup officially supplied to Russia, which is available with three modifications of the cab: single (Single Cab), one and a half (Rap Cab) and double (Double Cab).

Unlike a car with a mechanical box, an automatic Ford Ranger, instead of a traditional lever, received a separate twist that placed on the central tunnel. As before, three modes are available: 2H, 4H and 4L. In the first mode, the car remains strictly rear -wheel drive. When 4H is turned on, the front axis is connected, while you can go in this mode no more than 100 km/h. Switching to the reducing mode 4L is necessary only in conditions of heavy off -road. At the same time, the torque increases significantly, and the recommended speed limit is reduced to 40 km/h.

It is impossible not to note a good off -road arsenal, which, in addition to the lowering, include good geometric data and clearance of 205 mm. Of the electronic assistants only ABS. Neither the stabilization system nor antibux is listed in the list of equipment.

A 5-speed automatic transmission, which with small changes was borrowed from the Ford Explorer SUV, is characterized by smooth operation and moderate delays in switching. In the version from the automatic transmission on the dashboard, a scale of automatic transmission modes appeared. Instead of a traditional lever, a special drive control is responsible for a special steeple on the central tunnel.

Meanwhile, alternatives of the choice are not offered to the automatic transmission lovers. Ford Ranger with an automatic machine is available only in the rich performance of Limited, which includes air conditioning, an audio system with six speakers, a leather interior, rear parking sensors, chrome steps, a compass rollometer, as well as a full electric package and 16-inch wheels. The price in comparison with competitors is not the smallest 1,211,500 rubles. Of the dopes, only the color of metallic (15,000 rubles), a towbar (23,000 rubles), secrets for wheels (2,900 rubles) and Kung (80,000 rubles)

Is it just not late for Ford? The bestseller Mitsubishi L200 is already inaccessible, the new VW Amarok has been led to the segment leaders for several months, and Toyota Hilux burst into the Russian market with two motors and an unimaginable number of configurations. Ford trumpets with three modifications of the cab (double Double Cab, one and a half Rap Cab and a single Single Cab). In addition, with the advent of the automatic version, Ranger will take part of the customers from the twin Mazda BT-50, which is still not offered with automatic transmission.

Passport 14.7 seconds to 100 km/h do not inspire optimism. However, in fact, Ranger with automatic transmission has enough dynamics for pickup.

In addition, Ford Ranger is left to hold out very little, namely, until next year, when a new generation of pickupa appears on the European market, whose premiere not so long ago took place in Australia.
