Daihatsu Terios test drive since 2006 SUV

Kids Daihatsu Terios and Fiat Panda Cross in the role of ... SUVs

You will not feel sorry for Daihatsu Terios (in Japan, it is sold as Toyota Rush or Daihatsu Be-Go) and Panda Cross if they are sent on a trip by complete off-road?

Mom is dear, but I'm not some kind of SUV for rally-raids! So what, because it is not necessary to enter every pile of stones. But this is the main thing. True, the ground clearance of only 160 millimeters stops Fiat much earlier than Daihatsu. Terios has 4 centimeters more clearance, and this circumstance can sometimes become decisive. According to this parameter, Daihatsu surpasses even the invincible Suzuki Jimny.
Terios has been plowing the open spaces of Germany from the northern city of Flensburg to the Alpine village of Garmish-Parthenkirhen for a year and a half. And during this time he has repeatedly proved that he was by no means a weakness on off -road. In addition, he took part in last year's super-test* from 4wheel Fun, which, as you know, only the best are allowed.
(* For a super test, 4wheel Fun journalists select 25 SUVs who are better from their point of view than others. After that they conduct long-term tests of these machines to choose the most out of 25. According to the 2008 test, Range Rover occupied the first line. TDV8, and the Terios considered in this article is located on the 23rd place of the editor.)
Terios received not the highest score in the super test, since the maximum depth of the fords overcame on it is too small at a depth of 35 centimeters of the legs in the cabin got wet. Does you face the same prospect in Panda? On it, you can swing puddles up to 40 centimeters deep. To those who feel uncertainty, it is better to turn around in front of an unknown reservoir and climb the slope again. At the same time, Terios shows that it has a very long first gear, which complicates the cautious rise to the hill.
Daihatsu does not have a reducing reducer for off -road, so it will be very useful for advice: you need to take the most complete Terios equipment, because this car is also produced with an automatic gearbox is practical and convenient when driving on the roads and using the trailer. And the constant complete Daihatsu drive has nothing to be shy, and the central differential can be completely blocked.
Panda Cross cannot boast of this. But he has a system for regulating the drive wheels for the rear axle, and it serves as a differential lock. Panda is always ready to become a member of the Dakar rally, and sand dunes are not afraid of him immediately if you look at it: durable metal sheets protect from the consequences of merciless bumps of both the oil tray and the average joint of the cardan shaft. The chassis is also quite durable: the rear half axes are made of hard torsion of pipes, and the triangular lever of the front suspension is a massive cast structure. It is logical to assume that the body is also reliably protected: very wide plastic overlays not only reflect the attack of branches in the forest, but also prevent terrible wounds on the painted body during parking in the labyrinths of a large city.
Under the hood of Fiat, which the driver actually does not see, the diesel engine is installed, he growls bravely, but for too bumpy off -road is weak. 70 hp It is quite enough on the plain, but when climbing up the mountain, Panda is exhausted. And even serial winter tires 175/65 R15 cannot help. The profile with a well -developed tread, although it improves gravel patency, but increases the braking distance on the asphalt. With conventional summer tires, Fiat would guarantee at a speed of 100 km/h for less than 40 meters. Thus, on average, the Panda braking distance is 42 meters, that is, one meter more than Terios is required, equipped with much better standard tires for SUVs (235/60 R16).
And this is not all: in the basic configuration of Daihatsu there is a system of course stability, however, only in the all -wheel drive version. Booking! Its salon turns out to be more spacious due to the length of the body, which is almost half a meter: twelve centimeters of this additional length are on the legs of passengers in the back row of seats, in addition, the luggage compartment has become more spacious. Possessing the best characteristics of the car for daily use at least as a family Terios car and outside the road is significantly ahead of Fiat. But the price of Daihatsu is appropriate: the purchase and operation of Terios 1.5 Top S will cost much more.
Reveal the world with Panda Cross please. Little Fiat is good not only in external, but also in technical parameters. But Terios, which, albeit not so attractive, behaves better on the road and on bumps, so deservedly wins.
Cars were evaluated in several parameters:

The spaciousness of the salon (maximum 15 points)
Daihatsu has more space for passengers, only in it adults will be able to comfortably get a job even in the rear seats. In addition, Terios is more located for transporting things by its luggage compartment more than 145 kilograms and almost twice as much as Fiat'a.
Daihatsu Terios: 8 points
Fiat Panda Cross: 6 points
Comfort (maximum 10 points)
Both cars are characterized by good depreciation, but Daihatsu still bounces more strongly. Yes, and his insulation is not too good, each pebble rattles in the wheel arches. Fiat's salon is even a little noisier. The air conditioner is included in the stock configuration of both Terios and Panda.
Daihatsu Terios: 6 points
Fiat Panda Cross: 6 points
Management (maximum 15 points)
Panda, although it is able to fit in a narrower parking lot, but the mirrors could still be larger. And in general, Fiat's review is bad. And its orange backlighting dashboard will not be like it. In Terios'e, an uninformative steering wheel annoys.
Daihatsu Terios: 11 points
Fiat Panda Cross: 10 points

Cherry characteristics (maximum 10 points)
The 105-horsepower Terios gasoline engine against the 70-horsepower Panda Daihatsu diesel engine will undoubtedly break out of the traffic light. But if we talk about the usual conditions of driving on the road, then Fiat is not at all behind due to a higher torque. In addition, its fuel consumption is much less.
Daihatsu Terios: 6 points
Fiat Panda Cross: 4 points
Cross -country ability and dynamics (maximum 15 points)
In general, Daihatsu perfectly behaves on the road and off -road, but Fiat causes more emotions. Nimble as a squirrel, he maneuverates through the jungle of a large city, but outside the road he makes his way much further than expected from him.
Daihatsu Terios: 10 points
Fiat Panda Cross: 11 points
Safety (maximum 20 points)
The honor and fame of Daihatsu, Terios is equipped with an exemplary set of equipment that ensures safety, up to the ESP electronic stability system. The braking distance of both cars is almost the same as that of good sedans. But without ESP Fiat weaves behind.
Daihatsu Terios: 14 points
Fiat Panda Cross: 9 points
Equipment (maximum 15 points)
21,490 euros for Terios Top S is too expensive. Panda Cross in the same configuration costs 4,000 cheaper. Already from the conveyor, both cars are equipped with all kinds of equipment, and the Italian can also optionally install a huge glass panoramic roof.
Daihatsu Terios: 12 points
Fiat Panda Cross: 10 points
Based on the results of the Daihatsu Terios test, I received 64 points, and Fiat Panda Cross 59 out of 100 points.
(The results of a similar test drive, in which Suzuki Jimny and Lada Niva cars took part, can be viewed here.)
