Science seduce a thin thing and not everyone is available. Sometimes, in order to attract the attention of a beautiful woman, you have to go to real madness. Seducting customers, car concerns sometimes also decide on adventures. In the midst of autumn, we went to Lisbon to get acquainted with one of the most adventurous cars of 2009: BMW 5-Series Grand Turismo

The 2009 season finally proved that the stereotypes of the class struggle in the world auto industry are fading into the background. Car corporations without hesitation fill the gaps between long -established and established classes. Ah, c, d? Don’t be formalists, Down with stereotypes!

BMW 5Series GT The brightest example of this approach. A luxurious variable salon from the BMW seven, a platform from the 5th series, the design of a la flatty x6 with elements of the compartment is such a funny Munich cocktail. Mix, but do not shake!

Perhaps, at first glance, the idea of \u200b\u200bsuch a car will seem slightly delusional to someone, but ten years ago and the BMW X5, which opened the door to the Bavarian brand to the door to the SUV family, seemed the same adventure.

With the BMW 5-Series GT model, Munich designers went even further. Not a sedan, not SUV, not a hatchback, not a station wagon, what is it? Sports limousine with elements of classic Grand Turismo opens a whole new class. Moreover, the BMW does not move in a horizontal plane, but in the 3D space, filling the interclass spaces between the models, which, it would seem, are located in completely different planes. BMW 5? GT series is designed to eliminate the gap in battle formations between the X6 and 7? Is it possible to combine two so diverse models in one case? The Bavarians succeeded.

In the glass of doors without edging, and the silhouette of the car clearly reads a hint of compartment. However, if you carefully look from the side and look inside, there is no doubt: we have a passenger X6, supplemented by high technologies of the BMW 7?

The first thing that draws attention when landing behind the wheel, unusual for passenger models of a chair. Like external contours, overstated, or, as expressed in Munich, the command drive of the Telskiy seat is another variation on the theme X6. But without fanaticism. The position of the BMW 5? GT series is a kind of gold middle between the BMW 5 and X6: on the one hand, you do not need to strain to climb into a high car, on the other, you sit much higher than in the sedan. At the same time, the cockpit is slightly tilted forward so that the driver was created that he was looking down at the road from top to bottom. Although the BMW 5? GT series provokes to look down not only at the road, but also at others.

The salon is written off in almost no bills from the 7th series. The same unique combination of space, luxury and harmony of design. Horizontal features are focused exclusively on the driver. The predominance of these horizontal lines, coupled with through longitudinal panels, is added to an academic car. The only weak point of the cabin is visibility in the rear hemisphere. For the original design, I had to pay with the wide shurs of the rear racks, which so narrow the viewing sector that sometimes only the parking chamber saves.

Already from the birth of the BMW, the 5th GT series has acquired three hearts: two gasoline turbo engines with a volume of 3 and 4.4 liters with a capacity of 306 and 407 liters. With. respectively, and 3 liter 245? A strong turbodiesel with a turbine of variable geometry. It is on the diesel GT in Munich that they have the greatest hopes. Many underestimate the diesel due to slightly worse dynamics, but our new 8? Step automatic gearbox, I think, will remove all issues, according to the Guru of the Bavarian department of the chassis of Iinz Krushe. On a diesel engine, each gas pedal is much cheaper than gasoline. And although the significance of the latest argument in the system of priorities of potential BMW GT buyers in Russia looks doubtful, the GT diesel engine and the GT car is infrequent, so for testing we decided to choose the diesel set in the top -end chassis with an integrated steering system Active Steering.

What to say? Contrary to optimism, the diesel was quite noisy, with solid starting vibrations. However, the matter here is not only in the motor, but also in weak sound insulation. The noises of the suspension are also transmitted to the salon quite clearly. Although, if desired, the GT nameplate on the trunk lid can be considered for the justification of such honesty: if the Grand Turismo car can be quiet!

But what really pleased was the multivariatic car settings. Formally four of them: Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+. In factory settings in comfort, the suspension becomes slightly softer than basic reactions; In sports, on the contrary, the rigidity of shock absorbers increases, the characteristics of the steering are aggravated; In Sport+, the transmission settings change, the system of dynamic stabilization is turned off, although not absolutely, a system of dynamic stabilization. But the driver can independently program the settings of each mode.

In comfortable mode, thanks to the Active Steering, slightly reducing the rear wheels, the angle of change in the trajectory seems significantly greater than turning the steering wheel. However, steering settings are very variable here. In comfortable and normal modes, a small excess rotability is felt. In Sport and Sport+ the steering wheel becomes an order of magnitude tougher and more acute. The same applies to the accelerator: the reactions of the gas pedal in city modes are very impressive and are accompanied by solid delay, which almost completely disappear when moving to Sport. With sports settings, the car becomes as dynamic, honest and pleasant to control as possible. Control electronics is no longer so clearly imposing its will. Yes, and the dynamics pleases: up to hundreds of the BMW GT 530D accelerates in 6.9 C for a diesel engine very good! It could have been better, but for a GT car, a two-ton BMW is still heavy. You have to pay for everything: to combine luxury and comfort 7th? The series in the skin of a passenger X6 with ease Grand Turismo is too much!

We do not love
The panoramic glass roof improves light and visually increases the space of the cabin. Light

The original automatic transmission selector has already become familiar in all the latest generation models BMW. Familiar

The moment of 540 nm in the range from 1750 to 3000 min-1 allows the diesel to accelerate to hundreds per 6.9 s. Solid

Driving
Variation allows you to configure the car for any driving style.

Salon
The salon is much larger than in the 5th series and quite comparable to the seven. Despite the hard central armrest, the rear seats fold.

Comfort
Sound insulation is not the strongest side of the diesel version. The rest of the comfort is at the highest level.

Safety
A set of mandatory security tools complements a number of the latest electronic lead systems.

Price
There is nothing to compare with direct competitors.

Advantages and disadvantages
+ Originality, ultramodern 8-speed KP, wide variability of settings.
- Weak visibility in the rear hemisphere, not the best sound insulation.

Our opinion
The originality of the BMW 5 GT inspires respect. And although the Mercedes-Benz ML built on the basis of the R-class unleash the R-class did not gain much success, the BMW 5 GT is probably waiting for a happier future. Located on the class stairs somewhere between the MB R-class and the Audi A5 Sportback, the GT concept looks much more attractive.
