Comments:

Passat turned out to be the only left -handed car in his group. Like all automakers, Volkswagen assures that cars with the right and left location of the steering wheel are equally safe, and the experts had no reason to doubt the case of Passat. The car complyed with security requirements for lateral strikes of 1998. In the frontal impact, he also proved himself well, but the hard elements in the lower part of the front panel were a danger to the knees, legs and pelvis of the driver.

Frontal blow:

The left windshield stand shifted back 68 mm. The passenger salon retained integrity. When hitting, the driver's door opened, so there was no problem with its opening. The front passenger door also opened normally. The steering wheel shifted back 85 mm and up to 15 mm. The recess was much compressed, and the brake pedal moved back 91 mm. Due to the unstable contact of the driver’s head with a pillow of safety, the rating for its protection was reduced. The neck was well protected, and passive safety systems prevented the chest strike against the steering wheel. The load on the chest from the seat belt remained within safe limits. The passenger salon retained integrity, contributing to the good protection of the breast cells of the front riders. The driver’s left knee hit the tray for the little things, but if the blow fell a little to the side, the steering column bracket would be hurt. Penalty points were accrued for this. If the blow fell above, the knee would fall into the castle and the mechanism of adjusting the position of the steering column, and the deeper advance inside the front panel threatened with more serious damage. The driver’s right knee rested on the soft plastic, walking along the steering column, squeezed her casing and, in the end, reached the column. The assessment for the protection of the knee, lower leg and pelvis was reduced due to the probability of a blow to the steering column lock and the mechanism for adjusting its position. Fasten bolts and a steering column position adjustment lever can cause a knee injury. The protection of the lower left leg was recognized as bad. The legs for the legs were slightly compressed, but the feet and ankles were well protected. The protection of the passenger as a whole was good, although the load on the chest from the seat belt was sufficient to lead to injury. There was also a small risk of damage to the left knee, lower leg and pelvis.

Safety of passenger children:

Protection of the head of the child. Four of the six control points comply with the requirements: above the reference bracket of the coolant, above the back of the engine cover and above the hood cover and the fold line.

Side blow:

With a lateral strike, Passat, by and large, proved himself well, comply with the requirements of 1998, but the protection of the abdominal department of the driver was recognized as weak. The protection of the head was good.

Pedestrian safety:

Protection of the upper part of the legs. None of the three points comply with the requirements. Two showed the result above average, and one below. Protection of the head of an adult. None of the control points corresponded to the requirements. Five showed the result better than the average, including places above the hood cover, above the brake fluid tank, and on the wiper. Feet protection. None of the points comply with the requirements - everyone showed the result worse than the average.
