Comments:

During the frontal impact, the BMW 3-series passenger salon lost integrity, and the driver risked getting a life-threatening chest injury. The degree of displacement of the steering wheel back increased the risk of injury, and the solid elements at the bottom of the front panel threatened the knees, hips and pelvic area of the driver. When the driver’s abdominal protection was hit, the driver did not meet the requirements of 1998.

Frontal blow:

In the frontal impact, an excessive displacement of the windshield rack was noted. The passenger salon was significantly deformed, the door was also badly damaged, and the support beam in the front panel almost completely separated from the car body. After the blow to open the driver's door, significant efforts had to be made. The passenger door opened normally. The steering wheel shifted back 223 mm and upwards with 14 mm. The collision also led to a significant deformation of the leg niche, and the brake pedal shifted back 321 mm. The airbag worked late and could not fulfill its function properly. This, as well as a strong shift in the steering wheel, increased the likelihood of a serious injury to drivers. The neck was well protected. The driver’s chest was affected by a large load from the safety belt, in addition, he did not escape a blow to the steering wheel with a force sufficient to get injured. The front panel pressed inside and the passenger interior deformation increased the risk for drivers of various complexes, so they reduced the assessment of the chest protection. In some other circumstances of the blow, the degree of displacement back of the front panel could be higher. The left knee of the driver hit the lower part of the front panel to the left of the steering column. The right knee rested on the panel to the right of the steering column. The line of adjustment of the position of the steering column or the bracket of the front panel can cause a knee injury. Significant deformation of the leg niche is a serious danger to the feet and ankles. After the blow, the experts found that the left foot was clamped between the fire -guided screen and the floor of the car. Protection of the passenger, in general, was good, although the load on the seat belt can lead to damage to the chest.

Safety of passenger children:

The seat belt lock does not fulfill its functions and can allow the shift of the children's chair forward. The mannequins shifted greatly forward, although their heads did not reach the backs of the front seats, the younger sensors noted a high risk of getting serious injuries. The instructions for installing the seats did not meet the requirements of Euro NCAP.

Side blow:

When hitting the side, the head and pelvic area of the driver were well protected, but the chest protection level was recognized as weak, and the pelvic department was bad.

Pedestrian safety:

Protection of the head of the child. Three of the six control points corresponded to the requirements (above the support of the hood, above the throttle drive case and on the hood bend line). Two points showed the result above average, and one, above the battery, below. Protection of the upper part of the legs. None of the three points comply with the requirements. Places in the center of the front edge of the hood, over the inner edge of the headlight and above its center were worse than average. Protection of the head of an adult. One point comply with the requirements: above the nozzle of the windshield washer. The place above the brake fluid tank was shown by the result close to the standard, four points - better than average, and one - above the hood loop - worse. Feet protection. None of the three points comply with the requirements, the result of all was lower than the average.
