Hardly anyone calling UAZ 3160 by his handsome man, especially in the form, in which cars are going from the conveyor. The power unit of the real alternative is not - ZMZ-409 today is the only motor, at least somehow satisfying the requirements of the plant. Environmental standards dictate the transition to the injection system with a neutralizer - without them it is impossible to fulfill Euro II. For a relatively expensive car, an ecological appendage is small. Ulyanovsky Motor UMW-249 has chances only with proper quality and low price - to invest in the Volga motors. The current owner of 60% of UAZ shares is not going to (recall that the plant belongs to Severstal).
With a diesel engine is more difficult. The upgrade ZMZ-514 is designed only for UAZ 3160, for long cars, he, frankly, is weak - too small working volume. The prospects for Shattier on UAZ do not believe, fearing that in fully domestic performance its quality and reliability will be insufficient. Import aggregates are good all, but too expensive.
 
A five-speed gearbox is also required, without it economic performance of the car leaves much to be desired. The current design with an appropriate fifth transmission crankcase will give way to a new box with a special switching scheme (the first and reverse transmission opposite each other), designed to drive off off-road. It will happen in the middle of the year, but it does not have to talk about the complete replacement of old aggregates, the process is obviously stretched for two or three years.
However, work is underway to apply imported boxes and disasters for top versions. The clutch is only imported: the ability of the car is depends on its reliability, and therefore the savings are inappropriate here, especially since the price will increase no more than $ 60.
