Test drive Jeep Grand Cherokee 2003 - 2005 SUV

Jack Eight

Grand, Over ... to indicate its superiority, except for the newfangled console Mega. And you have to answer for the clay. The full text of the tattoo is Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 4.7 Overland.
On the eve of the test, the main artist set us a tough and almost impossible condition - at least snow in the photographs. The fact that the implementation of such an order in early April would require dodgy from us was clear. But the fact that the jeep will have to lay out in full was a complete surprise.
The place that meets the whims of the artist, we found quickly - the winged hills well -known Muscovites. The hot spring sun had already melted snow on the southern slopes, and it was small at small - to get to these very slopes along a winding bike diving between the hills. Under the wheels of Grand Cherokee was a deep porridge of ice and snow, conjured by the first spring streams.
A storm in the snow. In a normal urban mode, on increased gear, the jeep refused to go, and it began to chat like a flower in an ice hole. Like a bad dancer, he was interfered with two things: a too powerful engine and highway rubber. Why, ask, asphalt rubber on an SUV? Then, that an overland version is installed by a 4.7-liter high-power engine. In an effort to increase the power and torque of the standard V-shaped eight, engineers worked with the design of the piston group to increase the degree of compression. At the same time, they changed the shape of the cylinder head, connecting rods, crankshaft, as well as an intake manifold. As a result, the engine power increased by 16 percent compared to the usual 4.7-liter V8 engine, and the torque reached the value of 425 nm. The question is, why on a car with such characteristics to put a toothy off -road rubber?

We had to stop and switch to a low row - its manufacturer recommends for heavy off -road. Having thus restored the straightforwardness of the movement, we crawled in the second or third gear to the place of filming. If the Americans want to call such a road heavy off -road, then for us this is the usual state of roads for six months.
GOODBYE AMERICA. The first attempt to climb onto the hill, cleansed of snow, ended deplorable. Behind her is the second and third. On the fourth we no longer dared. A wet, slippery rise turned out to be an insurmountable barrier for Cherokee, shod in highway. Maybe we could take this line with a cavalry scan of the move - along the relatively dry sections of Overland moved more than confidently. But there was no desire to rape the car.
The main thing is that we made an important conclusion for ourselves: you will have the desire and opportunity to purchase such a car, then have a set of real off -road rubber and do not be lazy to change the Grand if you plan to move off the asphalt. The precaution is not superfluous. With a standing equipment of relics and capabilities, Overland is enough for the impromptu Camel Trophy.

A modern all -wheel drive transmission of Quadra Drive II with a handout and self -locking inter -normal differentials in the front and rear axles is installed on it. The center differentials on the Jeep Grand Cherokee are not installed, but their function perform friction couplings, which, when slipping the rear wheels, connect the front in 4x4H mode and tightly closed when the reduced gear is turned on. Such a technique and the powerful protection of the crankcase really allow you to feel like an off -road. If possible, on dry, as in the USA.
Asphalt paradise. Still, the Grand Cherokee Overland feels more confident on the asphalt. Despite the fact that he has a typically off -road dependent suspension - unreasonable bridges in front and back. On a flat road, Jeep creeps like a passenger car. The bodies of the body are minimal, the steering is accurate, although a little cotton (what do we want from the American?), The brakes are a beast.
Grand Cherokee does not have numerous, fashionable systems for maintaining a target stability type DSTC, TC, etc. The designers believe that a constant full -wheel drive is enough to feel confident even on wet or slippery asphalt. Enough of the ABS system that works surprisingly correctly and does not remind itself of impatient shocks in the brake pedal. At the most critical moment, the Quadra Drive system is also ready to help and connect the front wheels: by default, Grand Cherokee is rear -wheel drive. It remains only to lean back on the seats and enjoy your power over a powerful car.

The mind is the ward. This jeep can do everything, just does not cook coffee. Through the so -called onboard information center, you can adjust the lighting delay in the dark, the operation of door blocks, the driver's seats electric drive algorithm. The wipers are turned on with the rain and themselves determine the intensity of the work. In short, in the list of options on Grand Cherokee in the Overland column, solid crosses - this means included in standard equipment and there is nothing to worry about the owner.
If the owner wants to accept such a car, then his choice is limited to attaching equipment - everything else has already been installed. By the way, there are a great many external bells and whistles for Chirik, but we recommend that you choose the MOPAR brand, the official supplier of spare parts and accessories for Chrysler Jeep. They are installed easier, and last longer.

Akela missed. Grand Cherokee Overland is the top of the lineup, the leader of the Jeep flock. But even the leader sometimes makes mistakes. Which, however, do not detract from his merits.
Sincere bewilderment caused us the quality of some finishing materials - for a car at a price of $ 60 thousand. It would be possible to find plastic quality higher or use it smaller - it does not go well with the decoration for the red tree. And beware of the configuration in which the doors are trimmed from the inside with light gray skin-it quickly changes color to dark gray, with dirt stains.

The seats seemed too soft to us - if we sit at the wheel all day, then it is drawn to listen to the television and drugs that relieve a shameful male disease.
The steering column in Overland is regulated in only one plane. Do not consider for the nit -picking, but I would like more from the car for the mentioned money - to sit down at the wheel, we spent quite a lot of time, but did not come to a fully arranging compromise with this car. And I would like, for we liked Grand Cherokee Overland. It has everything that you expect from a high -grade multi -purpose car that can be an overlain of any land.
