And let the familiar five -cylinder configuration of the Volvo diesel not bother you. The emblem and the name is the only thing that unites it with the previous generation of engines, relying on the body of the Hans-Gorand Milding, which stands in the center of the princely collection of the historical compartment of Volvo P1800. The motor was built from scratch, and the result surpassed our most daring expectations. The aluminum cylinder block made it possible to significantly reduce weight and improve heat removal. But most importantly, the engine received a fundamentally new injection scheme. To increase the power and smoothness of the work, a scheme with two consistent turbochargers of different sizes was used. The smaller works at low speeds, ensuring sharp response to the work of the gas pedal, the large supercharger connects at higher speeds, providing stably high torque in a wide range of revolutions. Together, a pair of turbochargers produce a pressure of 1.8 bar, making powerful accelerations at overtaking speeds: 80120 km/h. In addition, the high level of fuel pressure and the use of piezoelectric fuel injectors working twice as quickly and provide up to seven injections per working cycle reduce the level of noise and vibration on the steering wheel.
Despite the high value of absolute pressure and a power increase of 20 liters. p., the technology of two turbochargers brought a decrease in fuel consumption compared to the previous generation engine by 8%at once: from 7.3 to 6.7 liters per 100 km. But the most important thing is that at the same time the motor was very unpretentious to the quality of fuel. We tested the engine with all possible samples of diesel fuel, which were able to get not only in Sweden, but also in Russia, and there were no problems, Milding proudly smiles. D5 is not sensitive to the level of water and sulfur content. Another important feature of the new heart S80 for the operation was the introduction of ceramic candles of heating, reaching a 1000 degree of incandescent temperature (with a ceiling of 1300C) in just 2 seconds. This allows you to run the engine without preliminary warming up even fierce in winter at a temperature of minus 30C.
Unlike the engine, visual changes in the appearance of the S80 are few and for the most part are quite arbitrary. False in fashion specified by the XC60, the Volvo emblem. The front part of the S80 dropped by 15 mm, the rear to 20. The suspension received shorter and hard springs, viscous shock absorbers and reptile stabilizers of increased stiffness. To increase stability in standard configuration, the S80 was equipped with a system of automatic level adjustment, which maintains a parallel position of the body relative to the road, regardless of the loading zones and the number of passengers. As a result, there was no trace of the former melancholy Volvo S80. The combination of all -wheel drive, sports suspension and the new D5 engine opens new features in the character of diesel Scandinava. When passing turns, you feel the drive uncharacteristic for the model. The S80 relieves with wheels to the asphalt, and the constant high torque allows you to play with gas more efficiently, passing turns on the verge of reasonable risk.
The branded system of dynamic stabilization and traction control (DSTC) S80 AWD, if it intervenes in the process of turning turns, does it extremely unobtrusively.
