Nevertheless, it is not a complete set, although she deserves attention, became the reason for us to take this car for the test. The main motive of our meeting is all -wheel drive.
We still start with equipment. In the end, we are also interested in why people pay almost the second price for this car. Recall that in the basic configuration of Volvo S80 it costs $ 37,000, and executive is already 61,000. Outwardly, distinguishing a limousine from an ordinary S80 is not so simple: an inconspicuous wool that resembles a family coat of arms, with the inscription S80 located on the rear door rack, is, here, here. Perhaps all that determines the expensive option outside.
Another thing is the interior. The first desire that arises is to open the door - to remove street shoes. Cream skin, soft carpets, wooden inserts on the dashboard and doors make a strong impression. So strong that the desire to drive completely disappears. No, such machines are not controlled independently, they carry in such machines. And if so, take us. Where? Yes, somewhere until the film ends.
Yes, on the back the road passengers will not have to be bored. Liquid crystalline monitors located in the front head restraints will enjoy DVD, and champagne stored in the refrigerator will also give a festive mood. And so that outsiders do not envy, from their views you can fence off with curtains. Sound from DVD can go both through standard speakers and headphones, by the way, wireless, which is very convenient. You can control the DVD by the regulators on the player itself and from the remote control.
There is also a high-class audio complex with excellent sound in the cabin, which allows you to charge six CDs at once. The car is equipped with a built -in cell phone, and you can talk both according to a loud -speaking connection and through a separate tube - if you do not want a telephone conversation to be heard by satellites.
But no matter how good it is, you have to get behind the wheel. Here, too, everything is at the highest level. At the same time, you need to get used to anything. We took this car immediately after the XC90 was handed over, and there is no difference: all the same there, whether it is the instrument shield or control of the climate installation. Even the steering wheel is the same - wooden. The only difference in the control device for the audio system and the phone, yes the parking brake lever is located in a traditional place, and is not made in the form of a pedal, as the Americans love.
Only one moment caused a slight bewilderment. Having traveled to the XC90 for a long time, we got used to the fact that the extreme (in the course of movement) the position of the selection selector was the position D, and in this regard, we practically did not think about how many clicks needed to move the selector to hit the road. He moved to the stop and went. On S80 differently. The extreme position in the direction of movement is the mode when the box does not switch above the second gear. A little higher - no further than the third, even higher - no further than the fourth. Moreover, the lever goes in a straight line. Here you need to either count the clicks, or monitor the position of the selector according to the corresponding icon on the instrument panel. From the habit is inconvenient. In addition, the box itself, which is strange, works harshly: switching is not as smooth as it requires the status of a car. True, this is noted only in dynamic acceleration modes.
And the S80 is very capable of good acceleration, despite not the most powerful engine. Having equipped the car with all -wheel drive, engineers - for the sake of saving a place under the hood - were forced to put a smaller motor in volume. On the S80 AWD there is exactly the same power unit as on the XC90, which was in our previous long -term test: 2.5 turbo about 210 horses. So, here he behaves in a completely different way than on the XC90. It is worth a little tackle the gas pedal, the car literally breaks down, and intensive acceleration does not stop up to 200 km/h. Plus, the motor demonstrates good elasticity. You can noticeably accelerate if your speed is already 150 kilometers per hour. Apparently, in this body with smaller frontal resistance the same motor feels much better than on an SUV.
Now as for the all -wheel drive. If the car had only the front wheels leading, the emotions on the trip would probably be much less, and they would be over the edge. It is clear that it is not fit for a solid car to nimble on the road, and yet it is impossible to resist a little fuck. The behavior of the car on the road is almost impeccable, and most importantly, quite predicted. The fact that you do not make a gross mistake will take care of the stabilization system, which, even after a complete shutdown, does not release the driver out of control. As they say, courage is in the first place. Moreover, this obliges the status of a given car and the Volvo concern in general.
