Until recently, the most luxurious car in the production range was considered the top model. Now the most fast cars are becoming the face of the brand. For Volvo, this is S60 R.
The Swedes had to work hard so that the phrase Volvo Driver ceased to be, to put it mildly, condescending. At the end of the forties, the Swedish cars struck the Americans with their dynamic characteristics, but the subsequent policy of the emphasized care for family status and personal security affected the portrait of a typical owner that the name Volvo began to be deciphered as Vehicle of Low Velocity Owner (a car for a low -speed owner). Today, having changed the entire line of models and the system of their designations, Volvo applied the final bar to her new portrait: she had its own line of high -and -home models, which indicate the letter R.
Rrr-r ... A good tone for charged versions is the presence of numerous, but inconspicuous decorative elements. Volvo approached this issue with traditional restraint: only the design of the front bumper has changed and a small spoiler appeared on the trunk cover. This did not greatly improve the controversial design of the rear, but the S60 does not really need facelift to look dynamic. Proportions and powerful shoulders turn this model into one of the most muscular in their class. A significant contribution to the isolation of the S60 R from its more modest sisters make wheels - it is not for nothing that the perception of the appearance of the machine is half depends on them. These are elegant and aggressive 17-inch wheels with the letter R, squeezed out on one of the five knitting needles. Through them, powerful brake calipers (from Brembo) are all with the same index of R. Alas, a modest dodgy exhaust pipe in the left corner of the bumper spoils the picture. It seems that Volvo Car Corporation simply decided to leave the opportunity to earn extra money to companies specializing in external tuning.
 
 
In the design of the differences, of course, much more. The in -line five with a volume of more than 2.5 liters is equipped with a turbocharger with an intermediate cooler and a smooth change in the phase of gas distribution. The setting of the engine made it possible to achieve an impressive vomiting curve: the maximum plateau is stretched from about 2000 and almost to the speed of maximum power. In the version with a six -speed mechanics, the engine produces 400 Nm, but the option we get with a five -band automatic is slightly more modest - 350 Nm. Most likely, this is due to the limitation of the moment that the box can pass.
Like Audi squads, the Swedish Erka is produced exclusively with all -wheel drive. However, here, instead of differential, the multi -disc clowing of the Swedish company Haldex is used - it is already known thanks to similar units that Volkswagen puts on its Golf 4Motion.
Active suspension with the electronic control of Fourc is completed, which controls the movement of the car and can adjust the characteristics of shock absorbers up to 500 times per second. In a word, a very good set for about fifty thousand dollars.
Four -door compartment. We got a dark gray car with a leather salon, the color of which is called cinnamon, but the Russian eye is more like carrots. In any case, the combination of the official shade of the exterior and such bright contents looks unusual. Powerful seats are characterized by enlarged compared to standard elements of lateral support - it is convenient. The range of adjustments is sufficient in all areas, except for the height of the pillow, more precisely, its Nizhina. Perhaps this is due to the desire to preserve at least the minimum of the legs of the rear passengers, which will be more spacious if those sitting on the front chairs are not higher than 170 cm. This is the fee for the elegant decline in the roof in the style of the compartment-this is because of it the rear seat I had to move forward. However, in the real compartment the situation is even worse.
 
 
Distribute? The devices have a dark blue background and shimmer when the backlight is turned on with cheerful rays, like the Swiss watch dial. Everything is read perfectly, except for the indications of the on -board computer, whose small window is traditionally located in the lower left corner of the device of the devices. The numbers and letters, alas, are small, and to read the readings, you have to be distracted from the road. The steering wheel is very convenient, which, of course, is regulated in two planes. Eh, if these adjustments had an electric drive and it could be connected to the memory of the driver's seat ... The rest of the claim is simply inappropriate: the governing bodies are extremely convenient, as expected from Volvo. Even at first glance, the uncomfortable angle of the protracted position of the parking brake lever turned out to be a very well -thought -out solution: we must try very hard so as not to notice it and try to move without letting go.
We start the motor. The five -cylinder unit responds with a dull and sipple voice. In the modes of maximum torque, that is, thousands from two and a half to the stop, such a sound is not at all happy, although this, of course, depends on personal taste. However, as for his work, there are practically no complaints, with the exception of the inevitable during the dispersal of Turboyama. True, inconspicuous. The car accelerates very cheerfully and fun. This, of course, is not a BMW M5, but also costs S60 R two times cheaper. And to satisfy the drivers' ambitions, the power is quite enough - at the traffic lights near the Volvo S60 R, there are always significantly more cars that Erka can easily show the rear lights than those that can bypass the hot Swedes.
 
 
The box also showed herself perfectly - switching occurs without the slightest delay. In a typical situation for the city, when acceleration is replaced by braking, and then acceleration begins again, many machines, even adaptive ones, increase the gear at high speeds of the gas when releasing the gas pedal at high speeds. And with repeated pressing the accelerator, a decrease occurs again, but with an unpleasant jerk and delay. Everything is very clear here - the box even at high speed remains on constant transmission.
Three points of the support. The suspension has three modes: Comfort, Sport and Advanced, and the comfort mode exactly corresponds to its name: the car so easily swallows road irregularities that you can inadvertently forget about its sports mission. True, for this you have to pay a noticeable foliage in corners, and sometimes in general boring behavior. When the suspension is switched to a sport state, the car begins to roll in the bends markedly smaller, it becomes more sensitive to the action of the steering wheel and does not lose much in comfort.
But the Advanced mode seemed to me just stupid. According to company representatives, this setting is literally intended for the racing track. At the same time, not only the settings of shock absorbers are changed, but also the engine control program. However, I did not notice a significant improvement in behavior: the reaction to the driver’s actions is still a little late, and the riders literally feel all the bumps. Although, in general, due to the features of the rear wheels drive, the coupling connects it quickly, but smoothly, depending on the front slipping - on the normal road, the car behaves like an ordinary front -wheel drive car. After all, it is such at these moments and it is completely easy to adjust the trajectory of movement.

The inevitable drawback of all the current Volvo is a huge radius of rotation. This is the fee for the supercompact motor compartment in which five- and even six-cylinder engines managed to squeeze across.
So what happened? Great power unit: all -wheel drive, brilliant for this class dynamic characteristics and a good set of equipment. This is more than enough for a city car, let's say, with advanced capabilities.
