True, the S60 cannot boast of the highest assessment - only four stars on EURONCAP (see the history of the model). However, such configurations are rare: as a rule, Volvo (and its buyers) do not save on safety. All electronic modules (there are almost two dozen of them) communicate through a canan, the only disadvantage of which is the complication of connecting new devices and determining a faulty block. Even experts do not always determine the culprit on the first attempt. Electronics problems are rare. On the memory of the dealer, only a replacement under the guarantee of several 6-disc chain jerses and a continuous struggle against the whims of the throttle node.

Around the end of 2002, cars were completed by the throttle knot of Magneti Marellley, which showed itself not in the best way. Its damper often shows from the resins, of which there are many in our fuel, which is why the engine stalls when the gas is reset. The dealer recommends washing the knot through that - every 30 thousand km and only with a special liquid Volvo Cleaner H. You can not use others, because the solvent easily penetrates along the axis of the damper into the cavity with electronics, which is not all chemistry - an hour is uneven, will dissolve. Then prepare 28,000 rubles. And look for time for a visit to specialists. You can’t change the knot itself, because it is necessary to introduce the newcomer's CAN module to the entire on-board electronic community.
Since 2003, the whim was replaced by Bosch, who is less critical to the resins and deprived of fragile electronics, but, alas, is not interchangeable with the previous knot. There are practically no problems with it, and flushing is required less often, because a more powerful electric motor controls the damper.
BLACK LIST
All motors S60 are in -line five. At least after 60 thousand km, we wash the CVVT valve - it controls the couplings of changes in the phases of gas distribution. The delay will cause diesel thawing of the motor on idle and the loss of traction at the top, and the valve itself, very likely, will only have to be thrown away. The flushing will not save him. In recent years of release, the valve was finalized - they introduced a gasket -grid for graving dirt, but it is also useful to regularly rinse, as well as nozzles (usually through the same 60 thousand km).
The weak point of the engines is the upper support. Often, by 30-40 thousand km, a knock appeared in her silent block with a sharp acceleration or discharge of gas. But there is no thin one without good: the defect was so massive that the manufacturer quickly changed the structure, and dealers have long changed almost all the support of the old -sample under warranty.
Surely, all the engine cooling fans with which there were problems on the 2001 model year were changed. There were no fatal overheating because of them in the memory of the specialists, however, we urgently recommend cleaning the radiator (especially the air conditioner) from the fluff and dirt. The motor will pay off longevity, and the microclimate in the cabin will be better obeyed by your desires.
Do not invest in chip tuning. In practice, successful firmware is not common, which is not surprising. The Volvian engines are quite well tuned, and the intervention in the software does not give a significant result. But side effects - all the way: either the engine starts poorly, then stalls in transitional modes, otherwise it acquires a brutal appetite and kills the neutralizer and automatic transmission.
The timing belt (it on all engines) is changed after 90 thousand km, although for other markets the manufacturer prescribes a more rare replacement. The spark plugs on our fuel, as a rule, do not live more than 30 thousand km, with the same frequency we change air and fuel filters.
Diesel modifications were not officially supplied to us, as well as B5244 SG (CNG) for working on methane and B5244 SG2 (LPG) - on Propan -Butan. We do not advise purchasing such options: in shortages, both spare parts and specialists. True, there is no information about any significant refusals of non-foods.
Rested
Until about 2004, the sixties were equipped with SMI steering mechanisms, in which internal hinges (under the rack cover) wear out very quickly - sometimes up to 40 thousand km. Then the squelch was replaced by a more reliable ZF rail. Its thrust nurses up to 100 thousand, but it is absolutely impossible to put them separately on SMI - they will be shorter, so they will last only a pair of thread turns. Yes, and it is not easy to change the mechanisms entirely - in the best case, other hydraulic tubes, the lower cardan and several more positions of the little things will be needed, and in the worst - half a mashin is subject to replacement. Therefore, before buying ZF, check the list of VIN with a list of replaced parts. It may be cheaper to just include steering rods in the consumable list.
In our opinion, it turns out that S60 after 2004 has fewer problems. But the German TV is on the contrary: such cars are already in 72 places out of 113, but 4-5 years are located at the top of the list - 17 out of 107. It is not worth it: the operating conditions, and the assessment methods are different. In addition, the park of cars also differs.
At the cost of operating a car with an atmospheric engine, it is noticeably more profitable than cars with turbocharges, and the latter are not only more expensive in repair and maintenance, but also more voracious and are lost faster in price. Apparently, therefore, five -year atmosphericians are on average a little more expensive than a boost - demand dictates the price.
