Test drive Volvo 740 1987 - 1992

$9000

We are used to the fact that it is either dark blue or white, although this is not so, there are others. We are used to the fact that it is strong and reliable, and it is almost always the case. We generally have been accustomed to her for a long time
LOVE STORY
Volvo 740. Yankees loved her for Boxy-Design, that is, for angular, boxed forms, by the way, still popular in the States. The Swedes are its creators - for patriotic considerations. The rest of the Europeans - among other things for the same boxing, but only for the time being, until the fashion for Soft -Design, that is, on roundness and lifetime. The Russians did not particularly worry the subtleties of the design: at first they loved her simply for foreignity. Then, when the experience of its exploitation on ours has accumulated, sorry for the expression, roads, for its amazing vitality on these same, damn them, roads. Now she is also loved for a relative cheapness. A pleasant bouquet, agree: solidity, large sizes, reliability, unpretentiousness, ease of repair and cheapness. What else does our miserable middle class need, respectable de jure (in the eyes of tax collectors), but unexpected and involuntarily economical de facto? ..
Age Rubicon
Seven hundred forty has long known as a poor relative of the representative sedan Volvo 760. This is understandable: it is simpler in all respects. But it was precisely the simplicity that played the main role in the fact that over time, the people began to appreciate the 740th more than the 760th. Less of any thin bells and whistles are less than age whims. If the 740th was released already in the mid-80s, this does not mean at all that it is a complete garbage. With a good owner, this is a completely tolerable car.
Of course, if the wallet allows, it is better to take the car more hit. The 1989 model year should be considered an age-related Rubikon, as an independence service specializing in Volvo advises (it should be remembered that the new model year with Volvo begins in August last year, that is, the 89th machine can be made and in the fall of the 88th). Until that time, the 740th, as a rule, went to the market with a carburetor or with mechanical injection; Both that and the other is good, while the new one is not working on our gasoline. And the best for the 740th are considered gasoline engines with electronic injection: B230F (it was put on cars for Europe since 1989; to that only for America) and B200F (since 1990 it was equipped mainly by vehicles for Italy and Belgium). B230F is a magnificent engine. Reliable, simple, there is nothing to break in it. What is good for especially trouble -free drivers, he forgives a lot. For example, the destination of the timing belt is not terrible: the valve does not bend, repairs are cheap. B200f is also good, but he is weaker. And you should not tear the belt on it: it can forgive, or it can be punished with loss of valves.
You can take a car with a diesel engine (as a rule, it is a Volkswagen-Audi motor); In general, it is not bad, but still there is more trouble with him than with gasoline. When buying, you should definitely measure your compression: if you don’t get low, you should not contact this machine, the repair is unprofitable. In order for the diesel to serve for a long time, it is necessary to strictly observe the oil change mode (special attention to the quality of the oil!) And more often change the fuel filter. And God forbid to pass the change of the timing belt: the consequences of his cliff are terrible. It’s easier to buy a new diesel engine than to repair a ragged.
In no case should you buy a 740th with a non -native motor - the so -called Euroser (V6 produced by Renault). This is one of the engines for the 760th, and it was naturally not put on the 740th of the 740th. And they put, albeit rarely, different homegrown tunnists. This is a very problematic and completely non -repair engine. The Volvians themselves remember him only with an unkind word.
The release machines from 1989 and younger are convenient in that they have a diagnostic block with an LED under the hood: by the nature of the blinking of the LED, you can recognize the nature of the flaws in the engine operation. When buying a car, be sure to make sure that the control light bulb on the instrument panel is not twisted or not patronized with an oil pressure lamp - this is how particularly secretive sellers do this to complicate the diagnosis.
We don't need Hitchcock
Very briefly about some specific nuances.
Body. There is a difference between machines made in Sweden and Belgium. The Swedish has a better metal, galvanizing and paint. Belgian rot faster.
Transmission. When replacing clutch (new with a basket on the market - $ 200, used - $ 100), you need to change the crankshaft bearing from the checkpoint ($ 10-20), otherwise the clutch will quickly fly due to the beam of a worn bearing. Boxes, especially machine guns, fly only because of the oil: if you do not pour TAD-17 instead of a regular one, there will be no problems. If the car stood on the street for a long time (six months or a year), there is a chance to quickly ditch the cardan shaft suspension bearing-it costs $ 80-120 in assembly with a rubber coupling.
And the most important thing. The choice of spare parts and points of repair is huge. The scatter of prices for spare parts and services too. The branded details are quite expensive, but reliable. And the left is cheap, but only one example of a branded hood ($ 700) with a frontal impact is guaranteed to fold a house in the crushing zone, does not fly off the loops and does not fit into the salon. The hood of Taiwanese production ($ 300) may not work out, fly off the hinges and climb into the salon (it happened). Exactly in the face or neck of the driver. Such horror stories are appropriate only in Hitchcock's fantasies. In life they are useless to us
