In a word, the designers had to solve many diverse and in a sense, mutually exclusive tasks. It remains only to sympathize, because they had to be fine.
As you know, the basic model of the Toyota BB car is the Passo / Boon car, and in its development, the main role was assigned a brigade from Daihatsu. With the previously existing system of relationships between companies, such a car hardly could be developed. Believe me, I say it is not from myself, I just quote one of Daihatsu engineers who participated in the development of this project.
