SAAB 900 Test Drive 1994 - 1998 coupe

$7500

You can come across the original and stand out from the crowd in different ways. One of them could be the acquisition of Saab 900.
We mean the second generation of nine hundredths, which was produced from 1994 to 1997 inclusive. Moreover, the 900th remained on the conveyor for some time in 1998, until it finally displaced the model with index 9-3. Two hatchbacks, three -door and five -door, and convertible - here, in essence, are all the options for the bodies. Four types of engines: two 2-liter fours, atmospheric and turbocharged, as well as a four-cylinder atmospheric engine with a volume of 2.3 liters and a V-shaped Opelian six volume of 2.5 liters.
Health secrets. Explicit miscalculations in the design led to the fact that in the cars of 1994 and the first half of 1995, the suspension was frankly frail. Its elements rarely re -went out of up to 60 thousand km of run. After 1995, the design changes were corrected. So the suspension of the 900th must be examined very carefully. Especially ball supports, since they are replaced only by assembly with the lever. The price of the original spare part is $ 180 (plus work $ 40). Current shock absorbers will facilitate a purse for $ 112 plus $ 40 for work, and, as you know, these elements must be changed. Posters of the front stabilizers will cost $ 52 apiece and $ 10 per replacement. Add here also the upper support bearing of the rack, which has a plastic clip - about $ 30 (another $ 40 for work). If during a short test drive or when swinging a car in place the suspension makes sounds, and you are not ready to lay out about $ 1000 in the near future-immediately to the doctor, on the lift! To accurately identify the causes of these sounds, determine the size of the upcoming costs, and at the same time inspect the bottom. It will cost only $ 40-50. And try to convince the seller to decently move in price.
Only after that does it make sense to carefully inspect the body. The presence of corrosion, especially on the edges of the doors and the lower part of the wings, unequivocally indicates that the machine was subjected to body repair. Particular attention - on the so -called pillars - cups of shock absorber racks. A long dashing ride on pardins leads to a swelling of the surface of the cups in the rack fastening area, sometimes even radial cracks are formed there, which go from the attachment bolts to the central part of the cup. You should not contact such a machine at all.
Hot Swedish guy. In our secondary market, versions with 4-cylinder atmospheric engines are most common. All of them are 16-valve, with a chain drive of timing and, as a rule, with additional balancing shafts. With proper and regular care, their resource is estimated at 250--300 thousand km. But after the first 100 thousand, as a rule, a complete or partial replacement of chains and stars of drives, as well as tensioners and sedatives, is required. The procedure as a whole can pull dollars for 700, and how close this prospect is, the characteristic noise of the chains and the strong vibration of the engine will report. A stretched or blatant chain rises in an aluminum housing of the oil pump cover near the oil canal a hole, as a result of which, in the complete absence of external leaks, the oil pressure disappears. And what threatens the motor - you do not need to explain.
All these engines are very sensitive to overheating, as well as to the type and quality of antifreeze. When overheating, the head leads with the subsequent burning of the gasket, and with non -native antifreeze, corrosion can thoroughly gnaw the channels. In the first case, it may be possible to do with repair, but the inevitable in the second replacement of the head will result in no less than $ 1300.
The most information about the state of the motor is diagnosed on the service, but you can see something yourself. To do this, check the oil for the presence of an emulsion, cooling fluid - for the presence of dirt, gari or oil in it. The last visual inspection is exhaust. Thick whitish steam with a specific smell with a heated motor will report the penetration of antifreeze into combustion chambers. And the gurgling in the expansion tank at high speeds - about the breakthrough of gases into the cooling system. Black smoke will most likely say about the tragic death of lambda-zond ($ 250 with installation), and blue smoke during acceleration by car with a boost-about the imminent death of the turbine (more than $ 1000 with work). It is also necessary to pay attention to the operation of the exhaust system in the area of \u200b\u200bthe so -called corrugation - a flexible pipe connecting the reception with the rest of the system: it often happens that it is formed in it. The replacement of the corrugation will cost $ 80. The condition of the turbine can be checked by unfastening two pipe from it - generously moistened with oil from the inside, they will give you the reason to hint at the seller for a discount.
Do not flatter yourself that the car was more than driving. The nozzles in the nine hundredth motor are very sensitive to the presence of water and sulfur in gasoline, especially if the car does not drive constantly. Dying from corrosion. $ 80-90 apiece.
With a broken engine, you should definitely check the ignition distributor by removing the lid from it. The traces of the oil inside are simply murderous - the node is not subject to repair, and the new one will cost at least $ 600.
And his problems. For the most part, the nine hundredths proposed in Russia are equipped with a mechanical checkpoint. There are also ZF machine guns, which experts call eternal because they cannot recall the case of repair or replacement. The mechanics are traditionally checked, although the difficult or frankly poor inclusion of the first gear and reverse is suspicious. The not quite successfully laid cable over time changes its position, and, as a result, the clutch does not turn off to the end. Replacing the cable is not tragic - $ 23 + $ 30 for work. But the synchronizers and bearings killed because of this are already entailing the bulkhead of the box, which is much more impressive-about $ 700 ... But there is a small chance to get by with little blood: the peculiarity of this box is that it is possible to adjust the progress of the gearbox-in total $ 7.
Achilles heel is a generator. Any extraneous sound should be perceived as a warning - a new one costs $ 425. And the songs of the pumping pump will allow the seller to hint at the possibility of an ambulance to replace the part (approximately $ 450 with work). It is useful to check the liquid - Saab allows the use of only native, yellow. Keep in mind that the Reaka cannot be repaired, and its replacement will facilitate a pocket by about $ 900. By the way, it is useful to ask the condition of the tips of the steering rods and the frequency of convergence adjustment. If for two years they have not touched them, then this elementary procedure will entail at least the replacement of steering rods ($ 70 with work).
Now turn on the air conditioner. The clatter, noise or absence of periodic inclusions-offs of the compressor will again be forced to get a calculator: the coupling is $ 200, the compressor itself with the operation and refueling of the system-$ 800, the control unit is $ 80.
Want to take a chance? In general, the Saab 900 is a reliable, powerful, safe, beautiful and very richly equipped with various options. With proper care and maintenance, it can behave quite gentle in relation to the owner’s wallet. However, one should be aware that possession of not the most common car brand may be accompanied by increased expenses. But the presence of some non-original spare parts, the so-called showdowns, participating specialists who can carry out some types of repair, can reduce expenses by 20-50 percent.
