It would seem that there is nothing easier: they stretched the base of the proven 308th by 10 centimeters, attached a huge trunk from behind, took almost the same salon, and here you have a new Peugeot 408 sedan. The French say that before entering the local market (and this will happen in September), the prototypes of the model should hit Russia at least 700,000 kilometers. This time, Peugeot really paid great attention to reliability, because they count on very large sales (the best -selling car of Peugeot and the five -class Cs of class C), and therefore any response company will be ruined for them.


Peugeot 408 is much more sophisticated than the previous attempt by a budget sedan from Peugeot model 206 with a body sedan. The 408th is slimmer and is deprived of a henchouse of the back.

It is especially pleased that the French, having already accumulated hundreds of thousands of kilometers along our roads, reacted with attention and understanding to the small things that were insignificant at first glance. In the front of the salon, the 408th almost one to one repeats the Peugeot 308. And this is not surprising, because the budget of the model is necessary as a large level of unification as possible. The interior of Peugeot 408 is an almost complete copy of the PEUGEOT 308 interior. It does not claim to be premium, but made from pleasant materials and collected without flaws. This is doubly nice, given that all the components of the salon are Russian.

Nevertheless, for a test drive, we were provided only by cars with a powerful 150-horsepower engine, with a six-speed AISIN automatic machine, in the top-end configuration of Allure. This undoubtedly makes you look at 408 on a slightly different side, because the price of such a car is approaching 800 thousand rubles and no longer seems budget.


A pair of engine 1.6 TNR and a six -speed machine operate very harmoniously. The Aisin gearbox switchs the gears softly, but quite quick, especially in sports mode.

However, the fundamental difference between cars with different engines and transmissions is only one different dynamics. Because the four -speed automatic transmission AT8 upgraded AL4 version developed by the PSA concern along with Renault back in 1992, although it began to work faster, but still does not reach the hard assignment to modern automatic machines and robots.

This is not to say that the Peugeot 408 with a 150-horsepower turbo engine and automatic is rapid and fast, but its dynamics are quite acceptable, and acceleration up to a hundred fits in ten seconds (9.6). But such an indicator as the convenience of traction control is much more important. And with this 408 is all right: the expected response to the gas pedal, smooth switching of the machine in a calm mode and a completely adequate kick-dowan. The suspension may seem a little harsh for our roads, but it is very energy -intensive and provides good taxiing, even given the impressive road clearance and a highly located center of mass.

But judging by the dynamic qualities of other versions of Peugeot 408, we have not yet been destined, then you can boldly talk about suspension and steering, because all this is invariably depending on the modification. And it’s nice to talk about it, because the suspension came out what was needed. At first, it seems a little harsh, but then, when you look at which holes you walk on a good stroke, claims disappear by themselves. It would be impossible to achieve this level of energy intensity when using milder settings. And then there are no blows, no closes, no extra noise (Peugeot 408 is generally a rather quiet car, noise insulation at a very high level).

By the way, shock absorbers in Peugeot do themselves. They are brought to Kaluga from the factory in the French Sosho. Last but not least, a good level of comfort is achieved precisely thanks to them. Although the stroke, of course, is also affected by the stretched wheelbase.


With a very high level of Comfort, Peugeot 408 is also pleased with the fact that it was achieved not to the detriment of controllability. The 408th, of course, is not a sports car, but for a budget car with a half-dependent rear suspension, it will steer very well. At least, the reactions to the actions of the steering wheel are clear and understandable, and the rolls of the car in corners are small. The steering wheel is almost always poured with a pleasant and natural severity, with the exception of the case when it is in the zero position: there is a little information, but when moving along a high -speed line, this is only for the better. A very competently tuned electrical power. I did not like only the blows that come to the steering wheel on a broken road: they are not enough.


Peugeot 408 is not as fresh and slurred as Chevrolet Cruze, for example. According to the chassis settings, he is closer to Octavia and the focus. There are no problems with the dynamics in combination 1.6-turbo plus a six-speed machine. How it will be with less powerful gasoline engines later.

It is also amazing that the French were not afraid to bring to Russia and a version with a turbodiesel 1.6, which will be delivered only on the handle. The car will appear on sale at the end of October, and this offer should be paid special attention, because there are few diesel cars in this class. The characteristics of the HDI engine are not bad: there may not be so many strengths (112), but the moment (254 Nm) like a turbocharged gasoline 1.6 TNR.


The trunk of the Peugeot 408 is truly giant 560 liters. Only Skoda Octavia, near Renault Fluence (530 liters) and VW Jetta (510 liters) have the same. All other competitors have less than 500 liters.


The walls are even, there are two recesses on the sides, and the back of the rear seat folds 2: 3, forming a large step.

Of course, Peugeot 408 did not make a revolution in the Russian golf class. He did not defeat competitors with some design or technological delights. His idea is different: a lot of car for not a lot of money. I would like to say for a little money, but given the prices for top versions, this would be not true. On the other hand, it would be strange to expect outright dumping from Peugeot, because competitors from Ford or Chevrolet are also produced on Russian sites and are not too cheap.

However, the sedan body, solid size, huge trunk and strict interior of the 408th are able to attract many. Suspension and steering settings leave a good impression and really allow you to quickly drive even along a bad road, which is important for Russia. Well, the combination of a 150-horsepower engine with a clear automatic on more expensive versions is generally close to the ideal. Peugeot 408, of course, is not the most, but really wants to become it.

Engine 1.6 TNR
The ER6CDT motor, the code name Prince Engine, was developed jointly by PSA and BMW concerns. Its assets have five international engines of the year. The turbo engine flexible to force is installed on different PEUGEOT models (3008, 308 SS, 508, RCZ), Citroen (DS3, DS4, DS5, C4 Picasso, C5), BMW (1-Series) and Mini. Engines are produced at the PSA plant in Duvrin, France.

Skoda Octavia. The cheapest Octavia 1.4 (80 forces) on the handle is sold only in the basic configuration of Active and costs from 564,000 rubles. There are three more engine options: a 102-horsepower atmospheric 1.6 (combined either with mechanics or with an automaton), 122-horsepower 1.4 TSI (handle or DSG) and 152-horsepower 1.8 TSI (also a handle or DSG). Depending on the level of equipment (Active, Ambitio or Elegance), prices range from 614,000 rubles per Octavia 1.6 with a manual KP up to 876,000 rubles for 1.8 TSI with a DSG robot.

Ford Focus III. 7000 rubles less (542,000 rubles) of the cheapest Peugeot 408 costs a Focus sedan with a 85-horsepower 1.4 engine, on the handle, in the basic configuration of Ambiente. In Trend, Trend Sport and Titanium versions, the choice of motors and transmission wider: 1.6 (85, 105 or 125 forces only on mechanics) and 2.0 (150 forces, manual transmission or PowerShift robot).
