Opel Antara was developed in close cooperation with the Koreans, who launched the CHEVROLET CAPTIVA contractions six months ago, and the influence of Asian technologies can be seen with the naked eye.
Actually, having put the cars nearby, the differences can only be detected in the external design, while the silhouette of the body almost completely coincides. It differs only in Opel’s feed a little shorter, which reduces the trunk and deprives it of the possibility of installing a third row of seat in it, but the silhouette makes it more dynamic. The acute -angled headlights complement the rapid image of Antara and at the same time make it completely faceless to identify the brand of the machine only by emblem.
The interior is already more distinctive for the real Opel, although which exactly is very difficult to say, rather, a collective image of the passenger models of the brand. The same yellow display on the central console and three round deflector. The gray rotating hilt of climate control and the small keys of the radio are generously scattered across the console. Even people who had experience communicating with the tricky interface of the latest Oleshales will have a hard time in Antara. All the rest are simply doomed to painstakingly study the instructions for operation without it, it’s hard to even trite the frequency of your favorite radio station.
Having surrendered under the onslaught of critics of the new journalists, the Opelians abandoned the non-fixed steering wheel switches, replacing them with ordinary ones. It really has become easier to use them to use them, which the wipers are working for the algorithm now: everything is simple and clear.
There are simply no open shelves for trifles in the cabin, there is nowhere to put a phone or a pack of cigarettes. An even greater surprise was the absence of an ashtray on the central console of an ashtray, a smoking glass can be installed in a door pocket, but using it is completely inconvenient: it is at the very feet, and it is almost impossible to get into it, even without illumination. But non-smokers often use an ashtray, for example, like a mini-min. The cigarette lighter is also not in the most successful way, it is almost impossible to get into it between the seats, and given that it is red -hot, such tricks are not very safe. However, if you use the cigarette lighter as a socket, its location next to the central box is quite justified.
There are plenty of rear passengers very freely in all directions, and the central tunnel is completely absent. Formally, the back of the rear sofa has an adjustment on the angle of inclination, but its range is so narrow that the benefits of it are minimal. The trunk of a 5-seater designed compared to Chevrolet Capriva is not impressive only 370 liters.
By behavior on the Antara road, you can take for a real SUV. The absence of reactive effort on the steering wheel, solid rolls and the vibrations transmitted to the body from the unsaved masses resemble large jeeps. I even had to get out of the car and look under the bottom and hood ... It is strange, there is no side of the frame, the suspensions of all the wheels are independent, and the steering mechanism is ordinary passenger, rather than a globoid worm, like real crooks. As in the bowels of the GM, it was possible to create such an inaudible control of the car a riddle. Maybe the Koreans distinguished themselves with the settings of shock absorbers?
With an increase in speed, the situation improves slightly: after 100 km/h the steering wheel is difficult, and due to high and relatively narrow wheels Antara does not react to the rut at all. Unevenness disappears in the bowels of a powerful suspension. However, there is no question of any pleasure from driving and you just drive a certain car N. That's just acoustic discomfort seeps into the salon from everywhere. The rumble of tires is heard, the wind howl at high speed, and a rather modest motor is accompanied, forced to work at increased speeds. The engine is very intrusively heard in the cabin at 3000 rpm, which in the last gear just corresponds to 100 km/h. Even in the city, with a smooth and measured movement, holding the tachometer arrow below the 3,000th mark is quite difficult to accelerate too long. And if you want to go quickly, then be kind to listen to the howl of the motor or make music louder. A 4-speed automatic helps the driver to accelerate that there is strength, but a limited selection of gear rates does not contribute to dynamics. Yes, and the engine does not have to count on braking even with manual gear shifts, the machine refuses to hold the specified turns.
On the off -road Antara feels confident only until the wheels keep reliable contact with the road. You can slip through the laundry with the energy intensity of the suspension is very worthy or to storm the city border, the clearance allows. However, serious obstacles to the SUV, of course, are not tough for inter -seamy locks, Antara stops at the first hint of diagonal hanging, even the anti -aging system does not save. She works with noticeable delays and very rudely, so the benefit of her is minimal. In addition, the seemingly aluminum lining, which protects the front bumper from below, turned out to be a clapping of plastic for the test. In a word, Antara’s cross -country ability will move exclusively at the parquet level from the road, but it is not suitable for serious off -road adventures.
It seems conceptually the ideas laid down in Antara are very good. This is a large and inexpensive SUV that may well become an alternative to those who do not need an open body, but want to get a simple and spacious car for every day. But the laws of the genre dictate somewhat more stringent rules of the game. What is excusable to the pickupu causes irritation in the SUV. Small miscalculations on ergonomics and sound insulation for Opel are especially annoyed. When we had a Chevrolet Captiva on the test, ‹Link to the test› The requirements for it were much lower, but you expect completely different behavior from the German car. Releasing Antara on the market, Opelians risk their brand, which, thanks to the latest passenger models, began to strengthen significantly. Although the attitude to Antara will most likely not be formed on the basis of its running characteristics, but depending on reliability. If the SUV serves its owner faithfully, then for this he can be forgiven for him.
