The previous model Skyline (Skyline), named R34, appeared in May 1998. The new model was launched with unprecedented speed only three years later, and the fashionable expression of structural transformations is completely suitable. Skyline, up to the previous generation, was the owner of an old -fashioned layout with a low height, a short wheel base and a hinged fuel tank, and the appearance, of course, was also old -fashioned. On the contrary, the new model received a layout corresponding to the latest trends for rear -wheel drive sedans with a high height, a long wheel base and a fuel tank under the rear seats. In addition, the engine was replaced by a long and heavy in-line 6-cylinder to a compact and light V-shaped 6-cylinder. The distribution of the load that determines the dynamic qualities is also significantly improved from 55:45 to 52:48. Provinciality has also left the design.
 
V6 engine with excellent characteristics and high quality
The running-in was carried out on modifications of 300GT with a 3-liter V-shaped 6-cylinder engine (260 hp) and 250GT with a similar 2.5-liter engine (215 hp). 250GT has a component of S COLLECTION, made in a sports style with black interior decoration, and is equipped with 17-inch tires in the form of an option (300GT are installed standardly).
When I sat down on the driver’s place, I drew attention to the fact that the feeling of compactness exceeds the real size. It was possible to experience such a pleasant feeling, as if putting on a car on himself. This is a very important point for a car in which sports is a product. On the other hand, the advantages of increasing the total height (that is, effective layout) and the wheelbase are clearly manifested in the rear seats space. The sizes are such that four adults can easily sit with a height of more than 180 cm.
The impression of the chassis is almost the same for 300GT and 250GT. The suspension does not knock, like the Nissan Skyline GT-R, but there is no feeling of softness either. It is configured so that the expression is suitable for this stable hardness. On sharp irregularities, direct blows are sometimes transmitted, but on ordinary roads with a good condition of the coating (including the rough cloth) an outstanding sensation from movement, especially a sense of flat landing.
The steering wheel of a small diameter is equipped with a relatively fast transfer of attitude, but it smoothly acts from the very beginning of the turn, so it does not cause a nervous impression at all. He with a pleasant feeling changes direction, accompanying all this with a sense of comfort. There is a strong impression, as if the front part does not turn by force and with difficulty, as in previous models, but obediently, with a good preservation of the balance between the wheels. In this part, the real possibilities of a new layout are strongly felt. I also tried to go along the high -speed road, and the power of aerodynamic characteristics (with zero lift) was simply amazing. It became clear that the complete contact of the car with the road is provided even with an increase in speed.
V-shaped 6-cylinder gasoline engine with direct injection sharply increases the speed to the limit, while maintaining first-class smoothness. The sound is also pleasant. However, due to the short course, a thin line of torque is obtained. Naturally, 250GT modification is also fast enough, but if you want to enjoy free movement, we recommend 300GT.
 
Evolution towards the car of the 21st century
And this is the new Skyline ??? !!! Hmm. Many probably think so. I was one of these too. However, now, when I tried to drive and convinced of real possibilities, there was not a trace left of negative feelings. Of course, some may think that it would be nice to give the car a new name if the changes have reached such a level, but the Skyline brand is something like Nissan's sign. You can completely understand the mood of the company, which believes that it cannot be lost. If so, then a car called Skyline is doomed to the fact that sooner or later such revolutionary structural transformations have to be carried out.
In this sense, thanks to the new platform and the V-shaped 6-cylinder engine, the evolution of Skyline was ensured until the 21st century car. As a result of the powerful leadership by the chief manager of the horn, such a time of structural transformations was accelerated, and I think that this, undoubtedly, should be welcomed for everything for Nissan, for Skyline, and for consumers.
