For the first time to ride an E-class with the W211 body, I was lucky in 2002, when the latest Mercedes just began to be sold in Europe. It was in Slovenia on the border with Italy on a taxi parking. As a person who has been pushed in cars since childhood, even on vacation, I could not deny myself the pleasure of a ride on New Yoshka. I had to explain to my companion for a long time why we should miss the first two taxis and sit in the third. Already sitting in the new e-class, we talked with the driver and were so carried away by the discussion of the latest Mercedes models that we did not notice the excellent sound insulation (or maybe the taxi driver himself wanted to boast of the capabilities of the machine), as the speed exceeded 220 km/h, and this There was the simplest diesel 136-horsepower version of the E220 CDI.
But the most interesting thing is in another. The taxi driver’s story greatly changed my view of the e-class, the excessively broken lines of the body of which seemed even to elaborate, especially next to the slender three-beam star. When asked if the new Yashka is better than the old, the driver of hot Italian blood answered in the affirmative, waved his hands and began to go astray from English to his native Italian. It was about the fact that the e-class finally acquired at least a bit of emotions and sports, but at the same time became even more spacious and comfortable. These two qualities, coupled with the legendary German reliability, forced the taxi driver to reconsider his views and transfer to Mercedes with his beloved Alfa Romeo, which is beautiful and sports, but, alas, is not very reliable for his work.
Having received an updated e-class on a test drive, in the most modest version of the E200 Kompressor in the configuration, a special series, I also wanted to find a sports touch in his appearance, but, alas, it turned out with great difficulty. At the end of 2004, the new Banglovskaya five BMW, and then the Audi A6, entered the market first. Mentally putting Mercedes between them, you perceive the e-class as something average. He is not as assertive and aggressive as a Bavar, but still significantly more emotional than a cold Arian from Ingolstat. At the same time, spectacular oval headlights and a three -beam star on the hood do not allow to doubt the origin of the machine. As a result of restyling, the E-class acquired a new wedge-shaped radiator lattice, which, together with the faceted front bumper, made an E-class look like an icebreaker, which does not really combine with rounded sides and stern, but at the same time it refreshes the car and makes it more solid.
The concept of business class cars has recently been eroded. It includes even Korean sedans at a price of 23 thousand dollars. Against their background, buying a Mercedes is formally a machine of the same class, but several times more expensive-it looks unjustified: after all, theoretically, cars perform the same function of the company's top managers, while its head travels on a S-class. Moreover, the status of the machine allows it to be used with both the hired driver and steer it yourself.
However, the mythical similarity between Hyundai NF and Mercedes E-class disappears, you just need to approach the German sedan. Despite the venerable age, the current Eshka is the largest of the now proposed models in the business class looks very respectable. The predatory gaze of xenon headlights is ready to defeat anyone who doubts this statement or try to draw parallels with Korean or Japanese models. When an e-class with a body W210 with separate oval headlights came out, many accused Mercedes of deviation from traditional conservatism and loss of their own face. However, the nickname is glare, very quickly fixed behind the Eshka, even became the reason for the imitation from the Koreans: remember Kia Shuma and Kia Opirus.
Once in the E-Class salon, you do not immediately realize the status of a car. These linden inserts under the tree have already bored that a real veneer is not immediately able to see. At the first moment, the steering wheel is irritated by the steering wheel on the left below, which simultaneously controls both janitors and turn signals. In addition, next to it is the cruise control control lever that regularly falls by the arm instead of a turn signal. But after half an hour, a complete adaptation occurs at half an hour, and problems can arise only in a freelance situation, for example, when a pair of water buckets spilled out of the oncoming machine on the head of the car: the right hand is mechanically looking for a switch, and only after a second, a left hand, a left hand Presses on the desired end. And if you purchase an E-class for permanent use, then after 2-3 days with the machine, a complete merger occurs, not counting the indicated parts, the ergonomics is thought out to the smallest detail.
The range of adjustments of the driver's seat, as usual, exceeds the imagination when the seat shifts until it stops back to the pedals. And at the same time, there is still enough space for passengers from behind. Of course, the three of the back is not very conveniently interfered with a large central tunnel. But the two feel very comfortable on the back sofa, by and large it is formed for two.
The basic 1.8-liter engine with a compressor first seemed not solid enough for a business sedan, especially equipped with automatic. However, in practice, the engine power is quite enough for moderately active driving. This is largely due to excellent sound insulation even upon reaching maximum revolutions, the motor is heard in the cabin very muffled, while the dynamics is quite convincing. A 5-speed automatic, of course, is configured for comfortable gear shifts, and therefore do not wait for BMW boxes from it. But with a calm ride, the impression of movement on the electric trim is absolutely invisible if you do not look at the tachometer. If desired, you can also indulge with manual gear shifts, but this will not add to the abuse, and the delays between the commands and the switching themselves are decently annoying. So do not demand special sports from the E-class, and then it will not disappoint. When accelerating to the floor, the first wave of dynamics takes place after 140 km/h, and then, without much zeal, but very confidently, the E-class reaches 200 km/h more than enough for a comfortable business class car.
The balance in the adjustment of the suspension, of course, is shifted in the direction of comfort, and at the first moment the e-class even seems slightly wax. But the true German he knows how to collect all the will into a fist, and along a high -speed highway the sedan flies, like an arrow released from a bow, the steering wheel is filled with reactive effort, and the suspension does not allow any buildup. In the city, the city is at first annoyed by the large sizes of the steering wheel and the number of revolutions that you have to do from the stop to the stop in the parking lot, but the result of zealous rotation is the minimum turning point for such a large car. On some golf class machines, it is not possible to turn around as Eshka allows. Special thanks should be said to parknics that are inherent in ideology. Being located in the front and rear bumper, they inform the driver about the degree of approaching the obstacle to the scoreboard on the front panel and above the rear window. Until the distance is reduced to the limit, the sensors do not make a single sound why disturb the passengers, because the driver himself will see everything that needs. The warning signal is distributed only at the moment when less than 20 cm remains to the wall. What fully reflects the content of the E-Class, it is a real friend and assistant to its owner. However, he will never say anything to the arm or intervene in affairs that are not concerned. But if the driver threatens something, the car will take all measures to help him.
The main result of our test drive can be recognized as the victory of conservatism. If 5 years ago, at the time of its appearance, the e-class was a modern car, now it has moved into the category of classics. And he, like any other Mercedes, conservative in the good sense of the word by a car with a three -beam star on the hood. Yes, it is more expensive than classmates of BMW and Audi, and in comparison with Japanese competitors, the choice of Eshki looks like a height of waste. What once again confirms the crown phrase that the sellers of Mercedes like to operate - if you are still worried about the price of our car, then you are clearly not enough money to buy it and this is true: if you go to a car dealership with a calculator in your pocket, you better visit another dealer. Mercedes are not bought by the mind and, most curious, not by the heart of Mercedes takes something else, probably the soul, and maybe the whole person. And only by becoming the owner of the star, you can relax on the topic of image and how the surrounding your car will look at you yourself.
