The organizers of the test drive in Tuscany, of course, made a mistake, giving us the opportunity to compare the Cherokee of the second and third generations. Because immediately there was a temptation to turn in the spirit of the old leader of Cheroka, who reasoned about the influence of the pale -faced on the life of his tribe: before there were no taxes, police and newspapers. But there were many buffaloes and many bears. Women were engaged in farming. Men hunted and fishing. Everyone was doing their own business. And everything ruined the stupid pale -faced, who decided that this system needed improvements.
Without any leadership manners, but as an ordinary consumer, I note that some of the improvements, if not spoiled, then it was pretty changed by its harsh Indian image. The car was noticeably siring both outside and inside. Enough a cursory glance to see the innovations: the posed headlights merged through the Mercedes and blurred bumers, the fresher panel and instrument shield, elegant front seats, as if (I judge by a mechanical lever for a bite of the pillow under the lower back, and not by the presence of memory and keys of electro -regils) With Chrysler 300C. The pedal unit, by the way, as well as in 300C, moves back and forth using the button on the front panel.
You need to be more careful with the buttons if you suddenly take care of the height of your position in the car. Planting in the new Grand Cherokee, I must admit, the most commander. She is one, even if you lower the seat to the stop. When lifting it upwards, the head of even the average driver will first just fall into the ceiling, and then completely bend to the stomach, like a broiler chicken.
Together with the innovations, some European prying appeared, or something. Starting driving, I began to adjust the mirrors and instead of the previous, durable, the size of an old metal -tank, buttons found exactly the same plastic pimple that it sticks out in my ten -year -old W210 Mercedes. Along the way, I note that the plastic in the cabin looks good, but no tactile pleasure does not cause any.
The handrail on the front rack became noticeably thinner and elegant, but to grab it stronger to stay in the saddle, it is unlikely that people with massive fingers will succeed. Especially if the fingers are in the rings. Only the phalanx of the pianist will squeeze into the crack between the handrail and the persistent. The leverage, in that only acceptable form for a real jeep - that is, a pin -shaped one, is no longer there. Instead, a bifurcated tongue. I forged him with a little finger - the lowered and turned off the ESP. This light the manipulation is accompanied by a heavy clang, as if an anvil was dropped in the trunk. The clang is a sign that where the iron is not spared and the new Grand will plow off -road no worse than the old.
The confirmation that the jeep, like cognac or Fet, is a brand, and not just a concept, followed during a demonstration run along the deliberately constructed obstacle strip. Periodically, Grand took, with her, shameful poses, protruding and hanging the wheels, sometimes relying only on one of them. But everywhere: on log hills with roller inserts, inclined venues, boulders, as if stolen in Stonehenge, - he showed himself approximately, confirming the thesis of the best in the class of full drive in the booklets.
The manufacturer focuses on two four -wheel drive options for a new Grand. The first is with the Quadra-Trac II system, where the transfer case works in combination with the Brake Traction Control System, slowing down the skid wheels. For the second option, Quadra-Drive II was invented. In her set with a handout, there are electronic interdosseous and inter -well differentials, Electronic Limited Slip Differentials. The latter also have couplings, in the case of slipping, they block the half axles. Electronics allows faster, more reliable and, most importantly, at any time to change the condition of differentials - from completely open to completely blocked with all intermediate stages.
In a short time that we dragged along the landfill, it was difficult to feel the advantages of ELSD differentials over the former Vari-LOK. But my partner in the test found a flaw and for some reason attributed it to electronics. We stopped at a small dry hard slide. Twing by the tongue, I turned off the Low mode, switched to the drive and released the pedal. The new Grand slowly crawled, but not uphill, but from it. The old one in the same situation stood as if dug. Another colleague attributed this embarrassment to the conscience of the engine. The Grande rolled back was a new diesel of 3.0 liters. The standing has a proven 4.7 liter (by the way, it is not removed from production). It is a pity that it was not possible to check another new engine - 5.7 hemi.
 
But he managed to feel on public roads, where it was possible to check the car and in steep turns-thanks to the new gear rake, instead of the previous ball nut, Grand became predictable and significantly more obedient and on long straight lines. The character of Hemi is already known to experts for other Chrysler models. It is notable for the fact that 4 out of 8 cylinders are disconnected in him with uniform driving and small accelerations. This shutdown of Hemi (catching it is a matter, however, empty) allows you to save up to 20% fuel. It is difficult to perceive the engine that is different, which is a gift from OPEC.
Despite its almost six hundredth and power, Hemi promises more than he can in practice. In any case, the comparison with him withstands almost a widow less in cubic metature. And the price difference of almost 8,000 euros between them is the difference between the nameplate. You can nod to the fact that both go with the same 5-speed automatic with manual mode. This company is company: as on the clothes of Columbia, lightning is not fastened both in people, but from top to bottom, and here the move of the lever - from side to side - is made contrary to normal logic. From a functional point of view, manual mode can only be called honest. It will not switch to an increased box on its own. But in the opposite direction he will make Kick-Down. And-funny-in the window on the instrument shield, you will still glow, say, the fourth gear, although you have long been traveling for the second or five minutes just standing in front of the traffic light.
