Jeep Grand Cherokee test drive since 2010 SUV

Glutton

Long -term Jeep Grand Cherokee test: appetite, off -road and cost of ownership.

For a month spent in the company of Brutal Grand, we wound almost 2 thousand kilometers. And the relationship between us during this time moved along the sinusoid: euphoria from daily trips on an SUV with a huge V8 under the hood at first changed by disappointment, and then mutual sympathy.

Euphoria, however, disappeared quite quickly after about a week, during which the Grand demanded three or four gas stations totaling more than three thousand rubles. In just a month of operation, the 352-horsepower SUV on gasoline had to be spent more than 13 thousand rubles! For comparison, this is an average living wage of a family of two people.

And all because Grand Cherokee with a 5.7-liter Hemi under the hood turned out to be terribly gluttonous. The average fuel consumption for four weeks ranged between the marks of 21 and 26 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers, depending on the trip and the load of roads. However, this is explainable, because most of the time we spent most of the time in Moscow, pushing in traffic jams. And only in the evenings did they occasionally come off, giving free rein to the vocal eight on unloaded paths through the industrial zones.

In the cabin, at a hundred, silence reigns thanks to double side glasses and good sound insulation of wheeled arches and bottoms.

Outside the city, on the highway, the appetite of Jeep Grand Cherokee is becoming more moderate. The uniform rhythm of movement also affects, and the system of disconnecting half of the cylinders here works more efficiently. As a result, the lowest fuel consumption number recorded when moving along the highway is 11.3 liters per hundred. But this is at a speed of 90 kilometers per hour without overtaking and braking. If the pace of movement will be more pectaminous, then the consumption will grow to about 14 liters, and if you do not refuse to yourself at all or go along a loaded two-lane road with frequent overtaking for a long time, then appetizes will increase even in a liter-two.

But these are naked numbers, but in reality, suburban trips are much more wasteful: for a 130-kilometer trip, the suburbs on the fuel had to be spent exactly a thousand rubles. Turning this amount to liters of 95th gasoline, it turns out that the Grand for one trip was supposed to lime about 30 liters of fuel (20 liters per hundred), but the on-board computer stubbornly showed a third smaller consumption of only 15 liters per 100 kilometers. Why? Mystery

Where and for how much can you get to Jeep Grand Cherokee?

If you abstract from the practical side of the issue, then for trips over long distances, Grand Cherokee is almost perfect. Comfortable pneumatic suspension, coupled with high -profile off -road tires, allow you not to be afraid of even very bad roads, and the mighty V8 turns any overtaking into entertainment. The main thing is to get used to the light slowness of the machine, which reacts to a kikdown with a noticeable pause, or use the manual gear mode.

Add to this soft, massive front chairs, independently adjustable backs of the rear seats, an impressive supply of legs space and a huge trunk, and you will get a real cruise liner!

Only a monitor for the rear passengers is missing, but it can also be ordered for 72 thousand rubles.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee does not have a separate control panel control panel. The electronics regulates its stiffness on its own based on the current position of the Selec-Terrain system. Automatic mode is best suited for roads of medium -sized lousiness or primer, and it is better to go on a high -covering highway on a highway with a good coating, but it is better to go in sports, in which the suspension becomes more collected and digests unevenness without vibrations of unsproveed masses. And the mildest version of Rock, which is designed to drive on a rocky surface.

However, returning to the city, again and again you have to force yourself to put up with the overly imposing character of Grand, its dimensions and indefatigable appetite. But for what? I asked myself this question for three weeks until I once again remembered about evil tires and a 27-centimeter road clearance. He tucked a full tank and went to the off -road near Moscow.

For driving on dry forest roads, no special settings of the Selec-Terrain off-road system are needed, you can leave a car and only slightly raise the body with a separate button of air suspension control. Short overhangs and a large road clearance allow Grand Cherokee without effort to overcome any ditches and potholes, and a non -blocked center retains good maneuverability.

But in front of an blurry expensive or large and deep field puddle, it is better to choose the MUD/SAND mode (dirt/sand) in it turns off the anti -wings system and the Grand begins to confidently dig the ground with toothy tires. The lowering in most cases is generally unnecessary: \u200b\u200bthe mighty V8 has an inexhaustible traction margin in any speed range. Therefore, the 4WD/LOW button had to be pressed only once to force a steep lifting of bulk soil.

Grand cheerokee to block the coupling of the front wheels drive just you just need to deactivate the stabilization system with a button on the front panel. This will be enough to overcome most obstacles.

Two more Selec-Terrain Snow and Rock modes fully justify their names. In the first, electronics do not allow wheel slipping and reduces the sensitivity of the gas pedal, and in the second it raises the air suspension to the maximum height and activates the assistance system for descent. True, none of them came in handy in forests near Moscow.

If at first, the grand and the Grand and I caught a wary of ruts, then after a couple of hours we already confidently rushed along the broken primers in the fields, plopped into all suitable puddles, examined the overgrown forest roads and overcome the fords. Here, outside the city equipped life, Grand Cherokee feels at home. At the time, it turns out not a very sensitive steering that is well -insulating the driver from blows on irregularities, and the imposing suspension, swallowing any pits, and a large motor whose leisurely rumbling instilles absolute confidence in the outcome of any off -road adventure.

The main thing, of course, is not to skimp on the right tires: on the toothy tires of Toyo Crosscountry at, our grandi has never stuck. A couple of times he buried in the mud, but then he got out onto land without outside help.

The expenses of the owner of Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi in the first year of operation
OSAGO CASCO transport tax of TO-1 gasoline

Total: 353 286 p.
A kilometer of run (only fuel): 6.67 p.
A kilometer of run (taking into account all expenses, including CASCO): 17.66 p.
A kilometer of run (taking into account all expenses, except for CASCO): 10.16 p.

The total amount is impressive more than 350 thousand rubles for the first year of ownership! Moreover, the CASCO is not the only large item of expenses with active urban operation about 130 thousand rubles will have to be spent only on gasoline. And this is without taking into account the costs of winter tires, the installation of expensive alarm (this will help reduce insurance costs) and the loss of the cost of a new car, which can reach 20-25 percent of the price of a new car another 300-500 thousand rubles!

However, the possession of any full -size SUV is an expensive pleasure. And those who choose one of the competitors of Grand Cherokee will have to spend comparable amounts: fuel consumption of Toyota Land Cruiser 200 or Land Cruiser Prado cars is comparable to the appetite of the Grand, and the cost of insurance and maintenance will be at the same level. Even an economical VW Touareg with a hybrid power plant in the first year of ownership will require its owner to pay at least 270 thousand rubles.

THEN
The frequency of the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the V8 Hemi is 12 thousand kilometers or 12 months of operation. The first and third visit to the dealer will cost 14 thousand 800 rubles, the second about 17 thousand, and for the TO-4, on the mileage of 48 thousand kilometers, it will have to be given 38 thousand rubles.

How will the owner of the Grand have to pay for his skills? Let's count. By tradition, we proceed from the run of 20 thousand kilometers in the first year of operation by a driver over 22 years old and with driving experience for more than three years that lives in Moscow. The average fuel consumption is 23 liters per hundred kilometers of run, the cost of gasoline AI-95 29 rubles per liter. The average of the market is the cost of CASCO insurance 150 thousand rubles (the display of the prices of insurers is actually great: from 115 to 200 thousand rubles).

Who exactly does Jeep Grand Cherokee compete with in the Russian market? Let's see.

VW Touareg
The German SUV in Russia is available with a very wide set of engines with two gasoline (V6 and V8), three diesel engines (including V8) and with a hybrid power plant. The most affordable Tuareg will cost 1.996 million rubles, and a version with a 4.2-liter gasoline V8 with a capacity of 360 horsepower at 3.029 million rubles. In terms of off -road abilities, the VW Touareg is comparable to the grand, especially with an off -road package, and in terms of handling and combustion, even surpasses its American competitor.

Land Rover Discovery
Another European alternative to the Grand in Russia LR Discovery is sold with two diesel engines, as well as with a gasoline atmospheric eight of five liters, developing 375 horsepower. The price of top modification is 3.059 million rubles. The strengths of the disco legendary image and really impressive off -road abilities. Cons is legendary reliability and fast loss of cost in the secondary market.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado
In Toyota with Jeep Grand Cherokee, two Prado and LC 200 models are able to compete at once. However, the first in size and price to jeep is closer. With a gasoline six volume of four liters and a capacity of 292 horsepower, Prado can be bought for 2.48-2.82 million rubles, depending on the configuration. Prado is a serious SUV with short overhangs and a decent transmission. No wonder he is one of the leaders in sales in his segment.

Nissan Patrol
Another Japanese Nissan Patrol SUV after a recent change in generations was significantly heard in size and became much more luxurious than its predecessor. Now he has no diesel engines and mechanical gearboxes: only gasoline V8 5.6 liters (405 horsepower) and automatic. The basic modification costs 3.225 million rubles, top - 260 thousand more expensive. In the patrol cabin, luxurious skin, wood and a lot of free space, but the developers say that this car is still a serious SUV.

Chevrolet Tahoe
The only direct competitor to the Grand from the United States in Russia is a huge Shevy Tahoe. With a 5.3-liter V8 with a capacity of 325 horses, this car can be bought for a funny 2.23 million rubles. In return, you will get a lot of cars, but with an outdated interior, typically American chassis settings and weakly (due to huge mass and large overhangs) off-road opportunities. However, real fans of American SUVs do not need anything else.

By the nature of Jeep Grand Cherokee, a real male car. A little rude, but, according to the sensations, a very solid and reliable car that you can rely on. And in version with V8, it feels real charisma.

Would I like to go on Grand constantly? If the routes of my daily trips ran not only within the metropolis, then yes. But instead of the V8 motor, I would look closely at the option with a three-liter diesel engine: it has more torque (550 Nm versus 520 for Hemi), and appetite, I think, will be one and a half to two times lower. In addition, in a similar configuration, it will be 300 thousand cheaper than a gasoline Grand Cherokee with a top engine.

Although the large gasoline V8 in the ideology of the American SUV, which the Grand Cherokee still remains, fits much better. And, to be honest, I already miss the gurgling sound of Hemi.
