Hyundai Lantra 1998 test drive - 2000 sedan

Hyundai Lantra (1996-1997)

Any spy will envy such a number of names. In his homeland, in Korea, his name is Avante, behind the ocean - Elantra, and in Europe and Russia - Lantra.
The second -generation Hyundai Lantra car was born in October 1995, replacing the previous Lantra (J1) model, created in close technical cooperation with Mitsubishi Motors. The model was conceived as inexpensive and simple, but at the same time moderately spacious and comfortable. A year later, in 1996, a modification with the station wagon appeared in the Lantra family. The volume of her trunk with a folded rear seat reaches 1260 liters, which is almost three times the volume of the luggage compartment of the sedan - 390 liters. By the way, laying bulky things in the trunk of the sedan is very inconvenient because of the very limiting the opening of the rear lights and the low edge of the rear window.
In general, Hyundai Lantra II exists in six modifications formed by various combinations of two types of bodies - sedan and station wagon, three engines with a volume of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters, as well as two transmission options - mechanical and automatic. There is also the fourth engine, 1.5-liter, produced since 1996, but outside the domestic market of Korea it is not known.
Three letters. Lantra was exported in two GL and GLS performances. In addition to the differences in the materials and colors of the cabin upholstery, the latter, compared with GL, is equipped with ABS, a complete electric packet, various adjustments of the driver's seat, as well as adjusting the angle of the steering column. Flight disks with wide (195 mm) tires, tinted side glass and front electric windows are often found in both performance. But the back of the rear seat on the GLS sedans folds and is also divided into two parts. GL is whole and fixed tightly.
The dashboard, however, like the entire cabin of the machine, is executed in a rounded manner. Beautiful, but there is such an interior and its disadvantages. Smooth transitions do not have at all to install additional accessories and equipment, sometimes necessary. So, for example, it is very difficult to find a place for attaching a mobile phone or a radio joystick on the instrument panel so that they do not stand out and do not violate overall harmony.

Growth diseases. Considering that only the bottom, thresholds and wheel arches are galvanized at Lantra, it will be useful to pay attention to chips and dents, which will be clearly visible on the body panels and subsequently can become the first foci of corrosion.
A significant drawback of the Lantra is that it is low: the ground clearance is only 170 mm plus 14-inch wheels. If at a decent speed you do not notice the obstacle in time and hook it with the protection of the crankcase, then replacing the shield will cost $ 75. The lower edge of the front bumper can easily be left near the border in the parking lot - its lower part is not rubber, but plastic, like the entire bumper. When hitting an obstacle, everything breaks away at once. You should also pay attention to glass and all plastic parts, because many Russian owners have serious complaints about their frost resistance.
Another sore spot Lantra is the exhaust system. Its details, located under the bottom, rust quite quickly. And the new muffler assembly (without a neutralizer) costs about $ 130, but you can save by putting non -native for $ 95.
Good motility. Lantra II engines-in-line 16-valve four-Hyundai's own developments. Thanks to the injector, out of 1.6 liters you can squeeze 114 hp, and from a volume of 1.8 liters - 128 hp. The last motor is very frozen at a high speed of the crankshaft (more than 4000 rpm.), But he does not like driving.
The Lantra engine is amazing to overheating, even if the thermostat ($ 14) flew in the summer with a working air conditioner or jammed the fan clutch ($ 74). But in the frost, Lantra may not start because of such nonsense as the fuel filter not replaced on time. Due to the low quality of domestic gasoline, you need to change the filter every 20-30 thousand km, and it costs about $ 12, while it is recommended at least once every 50 thousand km to wash the injector. In addition, service specialists recommend attentive to the appearance of the engine. The Lantra motor does not like dirt, and it should be washed periodically. The service stations claim that this very beneficial affects the work of all attachments. And if the engine is covered with a perennial layer of dirt, then you should wait for troubles from the side of the starter or generator.
The Lantra automaton is Japanese KM-175, the same as on Mitsubishi. However, it is quite rare in Russia. Cars with the automatic transmission are unpopular due to the high cost in repair and maintenance, as well as due to the gluttony of Hyundai with an automaton. And the main advantage of reliable mechanics is its unpretentiousness for the clock, which is required to change every 30-40 thousand km.
ACHILLES' HEEL. One of the main problems of Lantra suspension is the use of cheap alloys in it. Often the details, their mounts and bolts made of heterogeneous materials are very corrosion, growing tightly without any welding. Complicated by this circumstance, the repair and replacement of such parts can be simplified if the threaded compounds have been lubricated or treated with anti -corrosion mastic in advance. Of the same cocktails, the Koreans managed to make not only fasteners-the wheel bearings of both the front and rear wheels do not go more than 60--70 thousand km and at the same time cost $ 20-25 per each. And you can replace the hub entirely for $ 78.
Silent blocks go on average 80 --100 thousand km. Replacing the front ones will require about $ 200 from you, and the rear - about $ 150. But the pendants' levers are a penny part ($ 18) and at the same time very strong: they easily exchange a hundred thousand kilometers.
Mysterious things happen with stabilizer racks - some owners do not even know what it is, while others regularly change them after 50 thousand km. At the same time, each stand costs about $ 70 plus bushings for $ 2 apiece.
The rear shock absorbers do not live on Lantra wagons: they require replacement after 35 thousand km, which costs $ 140-177. In addition, due to the inconsistency of the suspension fortress, the volumes of the universal often burst the rear cone springs-$ 84 per pair.
HOUR? NORM! Norma, on the authorized Hyundai services, costs an average of $ 25-35. It should be noted that in stores and services it is very large that the spread of prices for spare parts is very large. And in order not to pay excess, it is not recommended to buy details at the first outlet that fall. The time spent in search can reward you with generous savings.
The selective survey of several owners of Hyundai Lantra showed that the majority even remotely imagine what is included in the list of works of various TO. And in vain, since quite often masters save time and do not pass throughout the list. And it is useful to ask, having drove to the station after 40 and 80 thousand km, whether the oil was replaced in the gearbox. Since this should be done in addition to replacing candles, brakes and other liquids.
The largest and most expensive service is with a mileage of 70 thousand km. In addition to replacing consumables (candles, filters, pads), a timing belt with all videos changes, which costs an additional $ 155, including the belt itself and rollers. On average, every 10 thousand km Lantra costs its owners $ 165.
