The work of a designer who revives the legendary car is akin to the work of a sapper. And if the error can cost a life to Sapar, then a career designer, and the company will tarnish its reputation overnight. BMW chief designer Chris Bangle understood this when he made the first sketch of a revived 6th series, because cars with a body compartment always occupied a separate step in the hierarchy of the Bavarian brand.
Genetic memory
The first compartment released under the BMW brand appeared in 1931: the 3/15 PS DA4 model was built on Austin Seven units and did not gain very popular. The first real BMW compartment is considered to be a 327 model that appeared after seven years, one of the owners of which was the famous racer of those times Baron Hushka von Heinstein. It was then that in Munich the unique caste of cars began to emerge, whose representatives were admired by motorists at different times. In the 50s it was a model 501, in the 60s BMW 3200 CS, created by Nucco Burton, and 2000 CS, until the 70s finally arrived. In 1971, the light saw the prototype of the future 6th series model 3.0 CSL. The elegant and swift compartment laid the foundation for the next generation, which, in accordance with the separation policy in the series, received index 6, and the first car appeared in 1976. It was the same six that our compatriots called the shark and whose spirit, along with the 7th series Miraculously resigned in the compartment of the 8th series, which lasted on the conveyor from 1989 to 1999.
 
Then there were years of waiting and conflicting information about the allegedly preparing project, and during all this time only one person on the planet represented what the next BMW combat compartment should look like. It is easy to guess that Chris Bangle was this person. It was he who threw the car community with his original projects, the discussion of which does not stop all over the world, and back in 1999 he lifted the veil of secrets, publishing the concept of Z9. Then the public once again deepened into the argument about the creation of Banlal, not suspecting that this was the first step towards the revival of the 6th series.
Finally happened! Before the veil was dumped from the car, all those present were typed in the chest of the air. Some to give an exclamation of admiration, others to exhale with annoyance. But on that September day, there was not a single indifferent person at the exhibition in Frankfurt, because before their eyes one legend was revived and another was born. And the fact that the new six will become legendary, almost no one has doubts. This thing is very strong, genetic memory.
 
There should be a lot of cars
The rear -wheel drive coupe 645CI refers to those cars whose discussion is akin to a dispute between physicists and lyrics. Everyone has an iron argument, and everyone will assume that the truth is on his side. The car turned out to be large, which is atypical for a purely sports compartment and is inherent in cruel cars rather rather. He appeared before us on 19-inch wheels, with a light leather salon and a body, the color of which was unequivocally reminded of a sea predator. A large sloping hood hides a powerful V8 under it, the traditional nostrils on the six have become even larger, because the 8-cylinder hero and its 333 horses need air. The front headlights in the spirit of the 7th series are by no means friendly at the world around them, they seem to choose a victim and, together with the radiator grille, make the front part of the car similar to a predatory shark physiognomy. In the light plastic front wings, gills of the turning indicators are located, the wings themselves have a completely muscular view, and doors without window frames, as befits a large compartment, wide and heavy. In the outlines of the back, of course, bloodthirstiness is less. The lanterns are painted based on seven-lane, a small spoiler is built into the trunk cover, and two chrome nozzles of the exhaust system are peering out from under the bumper.
 
In the cabin, the music specially prepared by the organizers already sounded, with the help of which they showed the advantages of the Logic7 audio system developed by Harmann Kardon, and we penetrated this accompaniment inside the car. The interior of the 6th series is a combination of already familiar elements and some original solutions. The instrument panel is made in the spirit of the 7th series, with similar climate control and audio stages, and the devices gravitate more to the 5th series. The floor console is slightly different, and therefore the joystick of the simplified Idrive system has moved closer to the front passenger. The monitor of the system, hiding in a small visor, is located in the center of the front panel. The steering wheel is three -spitz, with an outstanding button of the sound signal, on the column is a whole forest of the handles, and on the instrument panel there are only two dioflates and a tachometer. In the configuration with a 6-band automatic transmission below the speedometer, the fuel sensor is located, and on the tachometer dial, the oil temperature sensor found its place.
 
The driver's seat can be called anything, but not at a wide, spacious, spacious with eight electroregies and adjustable femoral undergrowth. It is not necessary to squeeze it, and it does not hold as a vise, but the familiar in the 7th series pleasant excesses like massage and ventilation are absent according to the creators, they prevent the driver from feeling the car. The steering column is regulated in two planes using an electric drive, the main thing is to find a small joystick on it, and the technique will enter into business: half a minute and the seat is adjusted to the anthropometric data of the driver. And what about the back? Landing formula 2+2 implies constrained conditions for the rear passengers, but in the Bavarian compartment in the back seat, as they say, you can live. Two deep buckets are quite loyal towards their passengers, but the back of the front seat will unfriendly to their knees. If it were not for this moment, the 645ci salon could be called 4-seater, because, in principle, in principle, if you limit the claims ahead of those sitting in the territory, four medium complexion people can feel quite comfortable. The front seat, by the way, does not just lean forward, it also rises for the convenience of entering/output, but when leaving the car, the rear passengers will have nothing to seize on the ceiling.
 
The luggage compartment is opened with a handle skillfully disguised as a proprietary emblem, and has a volume of 450 liters, which is already a sign of a solid car, and not the Spartan sports car.
The joy of life
Suspension, brake mechanisms, hood, doors are all done on a new six -aluminum six, and remember also about plastic wings and trunk lid, so it turns out that a massive -looking car has a equipped mass of only 1690 kg. But under the hood 333 hp! It is impossible to forget the sound of a configured exhaust system: a loud bass with a barely audible metal tint, like a thoroughbred Harley-Davidson. But it is worth closing the door, and the sound disappears, leaving the driver alone with the car. Let the motorate of the motor evaluate when the car tears from the place! The sound of the engine begins to penetrate the upper speed range, but this is the same bass that did not become higher, but only even louder and resonance responds in the spine. The six of those cars that give themselves without a trace and this give the driver true pleasure. Acceleration turns into a struggle with its own emotions, and when the machine transfers another power impulse to the car, something similar to euphoria sets in.
 
The farther we followed the route, the more some interesting features of 645CI were clarified. Of course, the car is dynamic and swift, with an acute and informative steering control, equipped with Active Steering (see No. 10, 2002), but why doesn’t it leave that you are driving in an ordinary car? Probably because the sound of the motor penetrates the salon only after 5500 rpm, and the gearbox, without thinking twice, smoothly switches up.
 
Sport mode, part of the Driving Dynamic Control system, conceived as a balm on the soul of a bored driver, he, in fact, is. The machine stops being an intellectual and turns into a football fan of the football fan. Now it allows the engine to unwind to the red zone, and the gas pedal becomes so transparent that the car responds with a sharp acceleration to any touch to it. On long speed tracks, 645CI shamelessly puts the arrows, and only common sense does not allow you to check the true maximum speed. The car clearly keeps the course and in gentle turns writes the trajectory correctly, obeying the teams of a fairly hungry and low -cost steering wheel. The mountain roads of Spain is a real park of extreme entertainment! Narrow, with many cool blind turns, they were covered with a film of water that day. Every now and then, trucks and British right -hand drive cars flew towards. Here was a job for the vestibular apparatus and for the brakes. The latter did not disappoint: a quick reaction to the pressing of the pedal, a powerful progressive slowdown, intelligible work of ABS is probably all that is necessary to stop the speed car.
 
The six managed to show her character. At the entrance to one of the turns at a harmless speed, the demolition of the front axle arose, to which the electronics responded later, and the back axis went outside. At this moment, the stabilization system realized, and the car, abandoning the driver, performed several PA on a narrow strip of wet asphalt. In the end, the electronics stabilized the car, and we, with relief by sigh, continued the journey.
We returned to the press park for a long time, postponing the legend and trusting the search for the route to the navigator. It was on the way back that it became clear what 645CI really is. No, of course, this is not a sports compartment, the standard of which is M3 for many. The new car is classic Gran Turismo, fast and comfortable, modern and safe. He will allow the owner to relax and get real pleasure at the wheel, he will not cause inconvenience when traveling road irregularities, protect him from extraneous noise and every day will be to prove that it is not for nothing that BMW is proud.
The final
Sales of a new car in Europe will begin in January 2004. According to preliminary data, the price of the basic version of 645CI will be about 80 thousand euros. The buyer will be offered three gearboxes: a 6-speed mechanical, 6-band STEPTRONIC and first-generation SMG machine. At the request of the owner, the car can be equipped with a transparent glass roof and the Head Up Display system, which projects data on the windshield. The system of adaptive stop-signals, presented at the beginning of 2003, is still waiting for the approval of the European Commission, finally at the Detroit car dealership, the 6th series convertible debuts. In total, during the next year it is planned to sell at least 20 thousand cars.
