Audi RS5 test drive since 2010 compartment

Audi RS5. Volcano

Audi RS5. Price: Not defined. On sale: from III square. 2010

Too brutal for sports car, too powerful and pretentious for a trivial road car. What is the new Audi RS5 actually? To find out, on the eve of the eruption of the Ayafyatlayokudl volcano, we went to Malaga, where almost hostages of the air collapse that struck Europe. But the game was worth the candle!

Actually, we flew to the south of Spain, still not even suspecting which pig would put all Europe in a hitherto Icelandic volcano with a wildly inadvertible name. When on the morning of the test on the eve of the test yesterday the quiet and prosperous old light suddenly plunged into the chaos of the aviation collapse, which paralyzed almost all the airspace over Europe, the theme of the volcano became the invisible companion of the debut tests of the Audi RS5. Only behind the wheel, it was possible to at least temporarily distract from the patient for all the topic. However, at some point, volcanic associations surfaced, although already in a slightly different form. As it turned out, despite the civilian appearance, the real racing pain of the volcano is hidden inside the Audi RS5, in the bowels of which unexpected power and storm of passions lurk.

For the second time in a year with a small Audi, he conducts premiere test drives of its sports models at the ASCARI RACE Resort for a Ronda private racing resort. The Bavarians have chosen this highway for a long time. It is here that on the eve of Le-Man, they run in sports prototypes for a 24-hour race. Our acquaintance with the RS5 compartment also takes place here.

The first thing that is amazing in the RS5, amazing for so much brutal in appearance of the car, lightness and bones in control. Compared to the R8 V10, which I first got acquainted with the Ascari Race Resort, Audi RS5 is distinguished by a much more pronounced insufficient rotation and a tendency to long transverse slides. And then it all depends on your claims, capabilities and settings of the car.

We were lucky and out of luck at the same time. Having closed together with Singapore colleagues in the first test group, I had to run in the RS5 on the cold and still slightly raw from the morning rain the highway. It was impossible to squeeze out of the Audi compartment in such conditions, but there was a great case to experiment with the Audi Drive Select settings, the variability of which not only emphasizes the sports nature of the model, but also allows the car to adapt to road conditions. In addition to three basic modes: Comfort, Auto and Dynamic, there is a fourth for advanced users allowing the driver to independently change the settings of the steering, suspension, sports differential, engine and KP. Reasonable settings significantly expand the capabilities of the RS5. On Ascari, for example, the dynamic settings of sports suspension, even on a dry highway, not to mention the drying asphalt, were meaningless. In the automatic mode of operation of the elastic elements, the sharpness of the Audi is slightly dull, but stability in corners and speed on the circle increase: that which RS5 loses in two high -speed turns of the first sectors is more than played out in profiled turns of the last sector. The track dries, the speed melts. However, in spite of any manipulations with the settings, to completely get rid of congenital insufficient rotation, even with a sports differential, RS5 still fails.

Of course, if you retreat half a step ago, slowing down for a second on a circle, Audi will go like rails. But, on the other hand, on the racing highway, this volcano on the wheels himself provokes the driver to aggression: at each acceleration, in every turn. The native brother of the R8 V10 motor 4.2 -fraud V8 FSI gives at 8250 revolutions 450 liters. With. With a torque of 430 nm. For the first time in the history of the Audi, such a resourceful engine is subject with a 7-speeded S-Tronic gearbox working without explosion. Even the sports flagship of the Audi R8 brand, due to its layout, the box with two clutches simply does not fit into the narrow central tunnel cannot boast of such a perfect combination of the motor and transmission. The main technical highlight of the RS5 updated QUATTRO all -wheel drive system with a self -locking inter -beard differential with crown gears. The drive of the crown gears is carried out through four compensating gears installed at an angle of 90 to the differential body connected to the output shaft of the Communist Party. One of the gears rotates the differential of the front axle, the second cardan of the rear differential. In normal mode, torque is distributed through the axes in a ratio of 40:60. In total, a fork for redistribution of the moment between the axes is 70: 30-15: 85. But the main advantage of the updated Quattro is not even in the latitude of the range, but in the fact that the mechanical principle of operation allows you to practically get rid of delay. The reaction rate, and therefore the effectiveness of the system increases markedly. On the usual road, the larger RS5 is not required!

We do not love
The RS5 settings are set both packs of buttons on the console and individually through the computer. Variably

Severe dynamic lines are traced not only in the exterior, but also in the RS5 interior. Stylish

The center differential with crown gears made it possible to minimize delay. Effective

Driving
The character and behavior of RS5 varies significantly depending on the settings. A sports differential almost completely compensates for innate insufficient rotation.

Salon
Sports, but at the same time absolutely convenient in everyday use.

Comfort
Driving comfort is an order of magnitude higher than the R8, and in the most comfortable mode is quite comparable to the Audi A5.

Safety
One of the safest sports.

Price
In Germany, from 77,700. In Russia, it has not yet been determined.

Advantages and disadvantages
+ An excellent alliance of the reserved highly effective motor and working without breaking the stream of power of the CP. The latest generation Quattro all -wheel drive.
- A small insufficient rotation.

Our opinion
RS5 is an excellent civilian alternative to Audi R8 sports car. Although less extravagant, but an order of magnitude more functional and comfortable: both in terms of salon space, and with regard to the smoothness of the automatic transmission and an updated all -wheel drive system.
