The production of Mercury Cougar (or Mercury Cugar as it is called in Russia) ceased in early 1997, 30 years after it began. Although there was no immediate replacement, the model with this name returned to the showrooms of the salons in May 1998. Unlike his rear-wheel drive ancestor, the new COUGAR is an advanced-wheel-drive coupe that does not have twins under the Ford brand. However, the model uses the Ford New EDGE corporate identity, which distinguishes it from competitors.
